The real ratios is not to be found in the number of Koi per quantity of water.

Instead we should be looking at mass of koi per the effective processed volume of water. There are several very good charts that give you the approximate body mass of a koi based on its approximate length and every one of these tables is clear that just adding 3 or 4 inches in size to a koi that is 12 inches long can more than double the effective load on the environmental system.

The other factor that is very clear is the effective water volume/quantity multiplier that can be applied with a good well thought out filtration and water exchange system. 10,000 gallons of basic processed pond water can be more than doubled by a better volume throughput and an active water exchange discipline/system.

BTW, what's the rule of thumb on volume Vs Koi qnty?

I've heard its 1 koi per ton, not per 10 ton, I mean fully grown koi.
i've been told general rule of thumb is 1 ton per koi but i could have been wrong, mind you i'm not an expert or anything .

Hi,

actually there is no real rule for how many koi to keep in how much water. First of all it depends how capable your filter system is of handling the organic waste that is produced by the koi in the pond. If the filter system not good even 1 or 2 fishes in 10 tons of water will get sick sooner or later. As long as the filter can handle the organic waste and keeps parameters at a perfect level even a high load of koi in your pond will be acceptable. However everyone knows, the more water is available per fish the better it is (especially for the growth). The figures I know are approx. 3 kg koi per 1.000 liters of water as a maximum load. This load can usually be handled by any standard filter system when feeding is not excessive. The calculation can also be done the other way around. If you know that your filter system can handle 0,5 kgs of food a day (100 liters of Kaldnes K1 filter media for example) you may put 25 kgs of Koi in your pond (considering 2% of body weight as a daily feed). Anyway, I personally prefer having not too many koi in the pond but good quality. That gives me more joy than big numbers

Tough to evaluate with the glare. But, the dorsal scalation is looking good. Gives the impression of being male.
