Hi Mike, I can't update the latest photos of these shiros b'cos they are all in the mud pond for growout now. I should be able to post it when it's harvest by around Sept.

Hi Mojo, between two shiros that you posted. I personally like the first one as with Y-pattern, of course the second one currently doesn't show much sumi on the head yet but should be developed later on. Your posted is meaningful.

Dick said "see the black in the dorsal? that will appear later to surface on the back itself and create what is referred to as a "saddle" an important component to stabile the pattern". I truely believed it.

Thanks everyone for the valuable feedback; my first shiro posted is my first choice and it has a strong shiroji and dark sumi but need a lot of patient on sumi. Most of you have mentioned these points in somehow and rather. After listening to all the feedback here, I am more surely on "patient". That's right!! process of hunting a koi is as enjoyment as getting one.

Good feedback, TQ.

Hi,

I have recently been in SPKC (Sent Park Koi Farm) were Omosako held a seminar about his Shiros. I saw a lot of pictures with koi in their different phases of development. I also got some feedback from the boss there. It seems that Omosako Shiro take a while for their finishing and it is very difficult to judge them when they are tosai. According to Omosako Sumi on the pec and dorsal fins as well as on the gill area are a good indication for a positive development. It seems better to choose a tosai that does not have a lot of sumi. Actually almost all the Shiro looked quite ugly when they were tosai but when you see the pictures after they got 2 or 3 years old.......just stunning

I think you made a good choice with your shiro

It reminds me of Musashi...it was one of the ugliest fish during its time as tosai ! and hope, your koi will turn to one of Musashi look -a-like

Hi fellow hobbyists,

Sad new! The harvest of this shiro was turned out to be a disappointment . Few shiros including of mine were went missing from the mudpond . A big disaster. Sorry folks, our anxiety to looking forward of the end result has turned out to be an ash.

I think this is always a risk to be taken when growing your koi in the mudpond. It is either being stolen, or eaten by heron. Is anyone wish to share their experience here!!

Sorry to hear about that, Dan.

While we all know that there are risks involved in sending koi out to summer in mud ponds, your loss has personalized that danger all too clearly.

Best wishes in the future,

I feel you were on the right track. I have a koi from the same breeder. i have found out that the black has faded , but the motoguro is still stable. I have no problem with that because in cold waters the sumi will come back in stages untill it is fully devoleped. Look for the sumi on the body to be thick with no checker board apperance. even if it is only a small part of the pattern. Winter time brings rewards , but you must have patience . A true tategoi takes years and in the meantime you will enjoy its develoment. Some hobbyist have let go of fish because they expect koi to develope fast, not so in this hobby. Study the develoment of your fish and if the fish looks better in the winter you may have a great fish in time.

No, we wouldn't be able to see its development forever because this koi has gone missing in the mudpond.

By the way, the dealer told me that the money isn't refundable, but I can have a replacement. This Shiro supposed to be harvested at the size of at least 50cm to 55cm at the initial price of $2k including mudpond grow. Some of it siblings were looking very good and high quality. Unfortunately, without reveal immediately I was told that the nice one has owner.

My question is if you are in this situation...what would you ask for the replacement, in term of "price?", "Size?" and "category?" of Koi?

Some friends of mine were telling me that how sure am I that this Shiro is actually went missing? or could it be its turned out very good and the dealer just sold it for higher price? Any comment?

I can't help you work out the details on your replacement fish. It is difficult for hobbyist and breeder to agree on replacement koi.

Back to your original question, there are no experts on the the subject of what a koi will turn out to look like except maybe the breeder himself. The two things the fish has/had going for it were 1) the breeder- Omosako and 2) the motoguro.

Hi,

Understood your situation.
Getting from reliable dealer is important, just like some dealer sell fake koi under the name of branded breeder!
