Since there was no guarantee, you assumed the mud pond risk. Appreciate that you are being offered a replacement. Personally, I would thank the breeder and let him know that I respect his integrity even more for such generosity in helping me overcome my bad fortune, and tell him that I would be honored if he would select for me from among the sisters not sold to others. I expect I would get a very nice replacement, which might even be superior to my original selection.

If you do not trust the breeder enough to do this, then you should not have purchased from him originally. And, you should never purchase from him again.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for honour comment. I am fully agreed. Frankly, I was invited for the harvest and witness it myself. There were 15 Shiro missing from the mudpond and they were only netted 5 Shiros . I would say it was a big lost of money by the breeder. 2 out of 5 shiros are very nice but have taker, balance 3 were not turned out to be so good especially the beni emerged. So the replacement wouldn't come from the same sibling or shiro.

All I can say is the breeder is reputable and generous. They even promised to give me a good discount for my next purchase. So what else do I expect?

Omosako Shiro Utsuri Tosai

koicarp.org.uk I have entered a competition related to this web site for an Omosako Shiro Utsuri, I have basically got to pick 1 from about 49 fish, they are displayed under the "Show & Grow" competition. From all this youngstock is there anyone who could give me some pointers and pick out the top 5 or what to look for please. Has anyone got an Omosako Shiro that they had from tosai and how has it developed? I've read lots of different posts and internet sites on what to look for and my head is spinning!

There are some photos of one on my website that shows its developement over a few years. Unfortunately the koi died due to heavy metals before it was finished .

Very tough from photos, Alfie. While we wait for our Shiro lovers to jump in ...What I would do: (1) eliminate any that look like the rear third is too thin in relation to the front two-thirds. (2) Ignore patterns. (3) If you can tell, focus on the ones that have thick black some place on the body ... usually along the dorsal... rather than only fuzzy black. May not be able to tell. (4) Ignore the patterns. (5) Emphasize clean, pure white on the body from the shoulder back. (6) Ignore the patterns. (7) Of the ones left, focus on the ones with yellowish head tones, but clean white bodies. [Yellowish heads on Shiros often become the best whites.] (8) Ignore patterns, but emphasize those with some indication of black on the head somewhere. (9) If anything is left, pick the one you think is prettiest. When it craps out, take solace in fact that Omosako decided not to keep any of the 49.

You forgot something on bullet point 9... "ignore the pattern"
It will change... next month, next week, next year, and at least annually for the next 4 or 5 more than likely
