Our local club is more truly a watergarden club, in fact most of the folks I know around here that are a little nuts about their koi aren't even in the club. That has meant that koi talk stays out of the club and pond talk is almost all of what is "in" the club.

Well our meeting last Saturday was a little wild. Held at the home of a watergarden builder and maintainer it soon became apparent that he was massaging some of his customer flock with what he was demonstrating about building and maintaining a pond. Being myself , I was the first of many to holler "Bullshit!"in regards to cleaning an above ground, pump fed, upflow, layered mat waterfall with plants on top of it...YEARLY. In spring, yet. But the water stays clear.

Oh, it was a fun meeting. And for the first time I disliked our club. Disliked our club members, who were much louder than me, who wanted to put down all the complicated valve stuff and the unneccesary bother with cleaning everything. Reverse snobbery is a much stronger force than snobbery and kichiness.

Only two new members showed up with problems in their rock ponds.

So things haven't progressed far enough to have "club politics" yet.

You know what...let them have their rock bottomed septic tanks. When the bomb explodes..you can say I told you so!!! If they took the time to do a little research, then they would know better. Some people gotta learn the hard way!!!

Actually, the term "Koi Kichi" is used by many of these rock and gravel folk in a derogatory context whenever the debate comes up. Reverse snobbery indeed!

Kind Regards,
Bill

Yepper Bill

Heck, nowadays they don't even say Koi Kichis, they simply say Kichis and think they are being cute. I have seen so many of these folks with "troubles" after a period of time and the first place (well maybe not the first) or eventually turn to about their sick fish is typically one of the "Kichis" that they have openly critisized in the past. Then they complain that they don't have access to a microscope, antibiotics or other medications and search for a cheap fix to the Koi problems when they should have listened to the pond problems they were told about and that led them to calling the knowledgeable, "Kichis".

Its one of those "you can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink....not even with a swift kick in their arse." Fortunately their are a few who do listen and learn....then they too become "Kichis". LOL

When I first started(8-9yrs ago), I built 2 ponds. The smaller 600gal pond had gravel on the bottom and just a few shubunkins. 2 years later I decided to join the 2 ponds. When I shoveled out the gravel..It was a pile of muck. Really disgusting. Well, I realized quickly that it was nothing more than a septic system..that I was putting living creatures into. Lesson learned the hard way!!!

Actually, reverse snobbery is a misnomer for most of these folks, since reverse snobbery is a social phenomenon -- not a scientific one.

Reverse snobbery is the phenomenon of looking unfavourably on perceived social elites.

In the post WWII period, the phenomenon of the working or middle class aping the rich, or of deeming them to be 'their social betters', began to give way to the voicing of resentment against social distinctions -- perceived or otherwise.

This led to the adoption of the reversal of deferential attitudes toward what had previously been admired and copied as 'socially superior.'

While Hot Air Hawley is a confirmed class warfare warrior (and a reverse snob of the worst kind), most of the people with plant infested, rock & gravel bottomed, drainless, portapotty watergardens are just plain folk who are both caring and capable of growing in the hobby.

It's the ones who don't know, and who know they don't know and don't care that they don't know, who are the real troglodytes of the hobby. And we've all met a few of them, haven't we?

Yeah, only a few. While we're all born ignorant, only a few work hard enough to remain stoopid. Don
