pressurized filters

I have a 500 gallon pond with 4 Koi approx. 15" each. My current pump, pre-filter and a tiny Fishmate gravity bio/uv filter s@ck. I`m cleaning both filters every other day. I`m thinking about switching to a Cyprio Titan 1450 solid handling pump with no pre filter needed and a pressurized bio filter with UV that will feed my foam preformed waterfall. Will a pressurized filter for a pond up to 1000-200- gallons handle this fish load? I use all of the Microbe-lift products to keep the water nice and clean, I`m just sick of cleaning undersized filters. Will a 1450gph pump going through something like a Bioforce 2000 filter be flowing too much water for this sized pond? How much does a pressurized filter cut down on the pump flow? Should I go with a pressurized filter with the backflush option?

The improvements you envision will s@ck less.

Read for a while. The book Koi Kichi of course. Find one and order it. Wade through the Best of Bito here. That's good reading too. Answers will pop into your head.

Depth, volume, circulation, aeration, bottom drains and effective mechanical separation. There are no brand names mentioned in the above list, are there? Nope. They are concepts. More? Stability, resilience, convenience, mineral reserves, protection, nutrition. Blah, blah, blah.

Oh yeh, beauty, serenity, connection. Let's add those.

All of these can apply to a 500 gallon pond, but you will actually need to be more on your toes managing your pond than a guy with 5000 gallons. Good luck in your endeavor.

The depth is 27", total volume is 500 gallons. Circulation is fine with the pump drawing from one end at the bottom and feeding a small waterfall at the other end. A bottom drain is not an option at this time, the pond is already built.

Now how about some feedback on the Cyprio BioForce2000 with UVC for my 500 gallon pond?
Thanks, Mike.

Hi Mike, As it says at the top of the page, this forum is usually read by `serious` koi keepers. I`m not suggesting that you`re not serious in your fish and pond efforts, but I think that at least 90 % of the readers here have ponds with a minimum of 5000 gallons, and therefore would not have had any reason to investigate the filter that you are asking about as it would be nowhere near big enough for their needs. I think that you might be better off trying to find a watergarden site, as the ponds would be more in keeping with your pond size, and there would be a far better chance that somebody would have the experience of the type of filters you are investigating.

Here is my Cyprio, now retired from my 90 gallon indoor goldfish pond because it s@cks. Its a little drizzly here today as you can see. What other opinion were you looking for, dear. Should I go get pics of the used and never used 1450's in the barn, too?

500g with a bottom drain, minimum 3' of depth, 4' better, settlement chamber of excellent design, great interplay of water, surface and oxygen in all of the filters... Kickin it Koi Style.

Sometimes you have to rebuild to get those pesky bottom drains in there.

Is a bottom drain a absolute necessity for such a small pond? Won`t a solids handling pump drawing off the bottom do almost the same thing?
