My first pond had a non aerated 4" bd. I installed it myself, it's easy. Just take your time, read the directions and seal the liner w/ silicone. No leaks!!

The next 2 drains on the current pond were 4" aerated & installed under a foot of gunite and plastered, i did the install myself and guess what, no leaks.

For those that think they do not need bds, that's fine if you have the time and energy to vacuum the bottom but I work a 60 hr week & don't have the time. It takes me about 30 minutes of actual maintenance time to clean the 2 Nexus and Eazy each week & I think that's too much.

To each his own.

bottom drain is a must have

to me, it's a must have for koi keepers. I can't imagine building a koi pond without a bottom drain installed but I was wrong after reading this thread. in fact, I was surprised to find out that some koi keepers not only don't believe in and/or don't want to install bottom drain but seemed to advocate there is no need for bottom drain in koi pond.

Steve . . .

Yes, it's hard to believe that some folks who should know better share that opinion.

Too bad their koi will have to pay the price for their arrogant stupidity.

They do advocate bottom drains, just not gravity fed ones

Don,

imo, vacuum is something should be done inside the house to help out the spouse/parents. sticking the long pipe with hose into the pond and disturb the fish on regular basis is not the idea of good koi keeping practice. I tried to care/raise my fish with little human impact.

just want to clarify something. apologize in advance because this is not directing at anyone. stupid means one doesn't know any better which is not in this case. ignorant is knowing the differences but refuse to learn.
