Mike M, I bet if your homegrown could speak about what those tadpoles tasted like bet it would translate to: " tastes like chicken"...(most froglegs do )

Dick, I bet little garden snakes taste like chicken, too!

BTW, I was looking at the article on the Koshihara method in Amano's old book. There is a passage I fully believe:

"There is a saying from olden times, 'Feed fish with water', in the sense that water is greater prerequisite than feed"

Buy good food, but place your priority on water quality.

That sums it up very well . Koi are a river fish and bottom feeders but have addapted to impossible conditions some people do not even have bottom drains . I feed mine Mazuri because it is fresh and low cost . High protein foods spoil to easily and they do not refrigirate them . All my koi spend the summers in my mud pond and the most important is airiation I use a 1/3 hp compressor .
Regards
Eugene

Try Aqion food. Very inexpensive and good product. Friends working in vet school at UGA recommended it. It is what they use. Our club members order it in bulk at least twice a year. We got the high growth in around 3 weeks ago...fresh from the mill. In the fall we will order wheatgerm.

Just mixed our first batch of 'summer blend' this week: 15 kg (33 lbs) Hikari Wheat Germ with 2 kg (4.4 lbs) Ogata Special Performance. Then I threw in a 1 lb jar of OSI whatever (raffle prize), mixed it all up in the wheelbarrow and portioned it into air-tight, screw-lid plastic containers.

During the off-season we feed straight HWG.

Speaking of veggies &/etc., we tried bok choy (chinese cabbage) last week -- they didn't care for it, but we'll try it again next week

This week we tried radish tops -- which they ate right up.

Go figure.

I find Hikari saki food to be much too greasy. It seems they spry the pellets with oil to increase the lipid levels. I always see a slick on the water when I have used them in the past.

IMO there is but ONE decent koi food available on the market today but this is limited in distribution at the moment to Holland, Belgium, Germany and Denmark. I use the deep freeze pellets from Frost-Bites. It seems they have now come out with a dry pellet as well. I haven't tried it yet but my buddy in the UK swears by them

One of the interesting things I was reading about these new pellets is that the whole fish proteins are predigested using enzymes to increase the uptake in the gut. First time I have ever heard of this.
