" .....then start by soaking pellets till they become a mush and fall apart when hitting the water."

Eugeneg, I have big problem with the Sakai's statement. Doing as suggested would lead to the depletion of water-based vitamins - big time. And if you do that with the Dainichi food, all the vitamins in the green coating are gone. I trust common sense more than any (koi) master. stevec

I wonder this myself. IMO, we already paid top dollars for the pellets regardlesss of brands. those with deep pockets are willing to pay more for top brand or best market products. let's ask ourselves this question. does anyone ** really ** have scientific data to back up their claim with say x number of yrs of research and comparisions among all brand koi foods? to me, this whole koi food selection is more of marketing thing. let's look at other non-koi related products. I think most, if not all, would agree that kids wear air jordan sneakers doesn't make them play like mike. same goes for shaq and the rest of the other top athletes endorsed/personalized shoes. having said that, same conclusions go for every other freaking products on market. multiple different brands could be manufactured by the same factory. here is a fact. Alta Dena Dairy produces over a dozen of different brand names of milk. yes, it's the stuff that you ingest inside your body everyday, not your fish. did you ever wonder where is came from and what's in it?

Soaking dried pellets... my protocol is to put them in a cup, wet them very slightly and immedately dump out any excess moisture. I then leave them for a couple of minutes and feed them to the fish. With the deepfreeze food this isn't any problem as these pellets have a slightly higher moisture content and need no soaking.

If you read again this was for new arrivals no food for 2 days then just a mush next day then gradually to full feeding
One has to treat fish that have expereienced 36hr in a bag same as a person who had major surgery

I have taken 2 semminars with him but would be nice to take 10 times more .
Back to feeding he does not feed pellets it is all fresh paste food he emphesized the importance of fresh food . One of the things that he pointed out was that most ingredients for koi pellets came from the US and the Japanese learned from the US how to manufacture pellet food . It is too hot here during the summer and too cold rest of year so I feed Mazuri wheat germ and I wonder if the Hikari wheat germ is any better

Over the three decades I have been in the hobby, I have tried new foods to learn and see results but always come back to hikari. I feed their sinking exclusively in the winter, floating in the spring. I think it's a dependable/reliable product.

There are several of us on this board who have purchased various koi from toshio to monitor and learn from as they grow. I'm hopeful you might be convince to post some pics and commentaries. Dan Olson who posts here is working on an article for koi USA on what amounts to 2 ea of sanke and showa... a,aa,aaa quality now starting on their second year. We also have a tategoi in the mix so we can really learn. It's been a fun adventure and not even half over.

I found a sakai matsunosuke gin sanke tosai that i couldn't resist at a local dealers. I know what's gonna happen with the skin, so even tho the pattern is no world beater, it will be a nice koi. I really love his matsunosuke gin koi!
Any come with your bunch?

From my understanding Toshio Sakai Bred champions, but who conditioned them to be champions?

The fish from Toshio which I have will be starting their 4th year and gradually I have been reducing the numbers as I can not afford to feed them the worst was the first winter as I heated and kept the temperature at 70f useing my oil fired under cemment circulating system it is no wonder that they only keep the very best in Japan . Since they are in the mud pond I only feed Mazuri now .
Most of the fish which I got were culls when Toshio made a final selection before putting into mud ponds . He gave me a nice selection to study I will breed some of the males this year will be intresting to see what I get . I had one gin koi but was on the small side so I sold it

Very interesting!

When I was at Sakai's place this past October and January, all he was feeding was pellet foods. I did notice that in January, the pellets had been moistened but not too soft. I observed him feeding all fish from tosai to Oyagoi with these pellets. I really can't imagine a breeder taking the time to feed paste food every day to several thousand fish. Time is money and this just takes too much time. By the way, did he send you food or recommend any particular brand that he uses?

Mike

That was 6 years ago so he changed or probably makes his own pellets paste food is really pellets that have not been baked .He never asked about food but wanted to know all about my ponds and water .The interesting thing is that a lot of his male fish I never saw again till I drained the pond in Oct and I blamed the poor herons .
