Relationship between water clarity & hikui

In our weekend "koi talk", my friend thinks that gin clear water clarity and surface feeding are a contribution factor to hikui. The other factors are genetic and organic. So his best compromise is keeping green tinted water but clear enough to see some at the bottom. The feeding with floating pellets only in the morning or late afternoon for health and beauty observation, never in the high noon.

I like the idea, particularly seeing the gosanke with vibrant and luster beni in my friend pond. Is this practice common with crazy hobbyist? stevec

There are a ton of "reasons" for Hakui. I would love to see some research in that area. It can really wreck a nice fish.

Yes, there are other reasons to get hikui. Other than the 3 mentioned, red-loving virus was also on the list. Just wondering where is the money source to make a study? stvec

I suspect this idea of clear water causing hikkui comes from the observation that koi with hikkui often get rid of the symptoms when placed in murky mud ponds, but then it comes back months after coming out of the mud. There are hundreds of thousands...millions of koi in clear water without hikkui.

way back, I have 2 akai hiroshima sanke, 3 years old with hikui. I tried all kind of funk, including RX drug for Aczema(?), steroid, none work. I gave them to my gardener, who have a 3000g pond with 108 koi. 108 is magic number to many people from Asia. So the condition was not as good as in my pond. Magically, the hikui disapeared from the koi 1 month of so after they arrived at the new pond. According to my gardener, the 'healng' tree next to his pond kept dropping leaves into the pond. My gardener said everytime he caught a cold or flu, he would pick a handful of the leaves, steam them and breath in the steam. He seared that work magic on him every single time.

So, Stan, what's the name of this tree with the magic healing powers. Maybe someone could tell us about the properties of the oils or whatever in the leaves that help the healing. Might be on to something here for the treatment of hikui disease?!?!?!?

Is it the kind that you can wrap in a zig-zag and one puff your in magical La-La land? I heard some hobbyist in Japan use heavenly bamboo...They dry it up and soak it in water like tea. After that they soak the fish in it...

Hikkui is the curse of gosanke's collectors. Stan, if the tree's shade that cured hikkui then I would add more shade over my pond. But if it was the falling leaves then, maybe, we are in business together? stevec
