when will the spawning stop???

I moved a few fish from old pond into new pond and the males are in the mood to ..... a couple fish got bruises really bad that I had to take the injured fish back to the old pond.. one spawning a couple days ago but they are still going at it tonight. question is when will the spawning stop? they weren't in the mood in the old pond but they went wild in the new pond. wondering what triggers the spawning? is it the new water? can someone shed some lights on this?

Steve

All that fresh, nitrate-free water.... makes a fish feel like having fun.

Watch out for the injuries.

steve,
you can't stop stop them once the action starts. Oh well, you can by moving all the male back to the old pond. Don't move the female back as they will spawn regardless of where and what.

female spawns when there is significant environmental change, like major water chance, moving, weather change or introduction of new koi. There are many factors that I don't know.

besides injury, you need to keep an eye on ammonia level. My koi spawned this year, big time spawn. Now all of my better koi are all ruined. No more show this year.

Stan,

I'm checking ammonia reading twice a day. one in the morning and second one after work. it spikes to a reading of 1.0 yesterday afternoon. it must put a lot of stress on the fish. I also do daily water change to keep the ammonia down.

thanks for the suggestions,

Steve

Hopefully you're binding the ammonia in conjunction with your water changes?

steve,
when I was in similar situation, I turned to Chlro-X (spelling?). dose to 1.5PPM for the whole pond. THat did the trick. IT was cheaper than water change, and I get to keep my sanity.

yup! I am trying to maintain a reading of 0 to 0.25. change water helped but wasting a lot of it. good thing my wife doesn't look at the bill. I transferred some old j-mat from the old pond into new pond to jump start the new matala. I hope the Ultima II bead filter kick in soon. the instructions said it takes 2 to 4 weeks to kick in.

Steve,

you meant clorox? the stuff we put in the cloth washing machine? I am not good at measuring units in ppm. can you provide an example? for easy calculation, pick a 1000 gals pond or any other even number. thx

Steve

I'm hoping Stan meant CHLORAM-X not CLOROX. THAT'S A BLEACH! That would certainly kill your fish!!
