Water Shortage

Change in earth climate has a big impact in runoff water of the U.S. west. News of record low reservoir from Washington state down to California is nothing new any more? One city demanded 10% water usage cut or else. Other cities wait and see, but call for water conservation now!

Facing with this threat, what do you do?

a) Stop buying. (yeah right!)
b) Cull, cull, & cull.
c) Negotiate with neigbor for water quota manipulation.
d) Think and use the unthinkable B. soda for buffer.
e) Invest in a protein skimmer and reduce water change.
f) Feed less. this might be good as many overfed anyway.

What else can you think of to make the fish suffer the minimum? stevec

I know in Los Banos you can only water your lawn 2 a week and only after 8pm. I have a 240 gallon goldfish pond in the backyard which I recycle the water to the trees and other plants. I think as hobbyist we should respect some of those demands made by our local cities, unless you give up a daily bath so the water can be used for your fish.

Ive got a 1,000+ gallon a day leak right now. My meter quit working so Im not sure how bad it is. My well is keeping the pond topped off, and other than the water being deep green, no problems...

Ive got my own well so until that runs dry....

does this apply to water in San Jose, CA as well? I have been using the pond water to water the lawn but I have a little batch of grass. so most of them went to the drain.

It is time for the various water districts on the west coast to get off their a** and build some water desalinization plants. This technology has been in use in the middle east for over 20 years, and most of the plants were built by US companies. Also, the Navy and most, if not all, cruise ships use the technology. We have an unlimited water supply the ocean, it is time to use it.
Here is they story of a plant being built in Tampa Florida

Water conservation will just be the tip of the iceberg. Today the energy company that i get my electricity from announced a big hike. It's not gonna get any better.....so my plan is to drop my stocking levels. Yes I'll be buying fewer fish but it also means I can "treat" myself with better ones. I'll use my recycled water for my lawn and plants. I'll be looking into using the water from rain to be trapped in an underground reservoir for my lawn/garden/bonsai needs. My kids are grown and i maybe downsizing my house and lawn here in a coupla years. I think it wise that we seriously deal with this question. At some stage in certain areas it may be cheaper to punch in a well, most folks in windy areas atre going to windmills for electricity and selling back to utilities what they don't use so quite easy to amortise the cost......

After reading the response, I would like a add a few action items to the list:

g) Joint the sport club to excercise and shower there!
h) Using pond water for the lawn and roses.
i) Invest in a well. (optional, depend on your local law)

Please feel free to add to the list. Be creative!! stevec

CA leaders have been talking about building 7 or 8 of these water desalinization plants but they only talks and talks. I am sure they will talk again with the water shortage problem. Al Gore 2008. he invented the internet. I am sure he can fix all these global warming.
