red worms.

Hello Koi-Bito folks
What do you think about feeding red worms to the koi?
I have the home worm composting bin, and there are thousand of them red worm, I feed my koi red worms occationally as a treat, and they absolutely love them. Will it be bad or good if I suplement daily feeding with worms about 1 feeding a day either morning feeding or late afternoon feeding?

As long as you are not placing manures in the compost heap, the worms are excellent. I saw a nutrional analysis of earthworms once which indicated that they are pretty close to being a perfect food.

I'm glad it is good for the koi, I recyle kichen food waste according to the guide line, and have plenty of worms to feed the fishes. Why don't we have more koi kichi feed worms to their koi?
Reducing waste, good composting and food source for your koi and save money on koi food.

I thought about starting a little worm farm for that purpose, but our hot & steamy Florida summers are not the best for worms. (Winters are great, however, for those in Florida who want to give it a try.) So, I just get a carton of bait worms from time to time. Before Hurricane Charlie put them out of business, a mom & pop bait shop near me would sell me worms on Sunday afternoons at a very low price. They liked to get fresh shipments on Thursdays. The fish would get a full feeding of them most Sundays. But, after the 'cane there was not much fishing around here for a few months. They had to close down. Too expensive at the bigger shops to be more than an occasional treat.

Feeding Nightcrawlers/worms is part of my pre-spawning activities in the spring. First warm rain of the spring brings them out on the roads in the millions. I collected and fed over 150 dozen Nightcrawlers this spring to my koi. It takes about 6 dozen to make a pound.
