Some will recall this tosai Kohaku from a post back in April. She is in a mud pond at Nisei Koi Farm now. I came across a photo of a young lady that stuck a chord. I understand her style of veil is called a naqib. If that is right, I think the Kohaku has a name.
after world war two, there was a big surge oif interest in things japanese.
By the time your kohaku gets of a size to compete with others for GC, the name will be a "natural"......
I think it's fun to name koi according to what we perceive......
when my son was small he named our first asagi, blueberry......my daughter named our first tancho kohaku Beni Botan ( red button in japanese)....I always preferred japanese names....my first kumonryu I called ghost in japanese, My aka mae kigoi was the glow at sunset ( in japanese). lately I have named my koi still withinthe japanese name category but given first names......my latest tho a kohaku, I named after one of the staff members of
quality koi...tara. naming our koi is fun.....suppose some day to find a nutritionist that named their pond after all the food groups! LOL!
The Koi has a lot of potential from the looks of things. The woman on the other hand... unless you are her husband, or a member of her immediate family... you will NEVER know.
My Koi from Brady/Lotus Land Koi Farm are:
Han
Luke
Leia
My Japanese imports from Genki Koi are:
Anakin
Amidala
Obi-Wan
Qui-Gon
Yoda
I have two others that are swimming around in mud ponds, hopefully eating lots and growing. I will not name them until they are harvested and sent to me.
- Wayne, will be looking for a cool looking red and black koi to match his avatar.
Mike I liked that koi so much I sent them an email inquiring my interest in the koi a few months ago. They said it was not sold and would send an updated photo so I could decide if I wanted it.
Alas I never got that email. Now I know why.
Please keep us updated on the progress of this one and I'm glad it went to a super pond.
Rob: No hard feelings, I hope! We'll see in October when she comes out of the mud whether she is deserving... of a third year in the mud.
Doesn't everyone name their koi in some fashion? Perhaps it simply becomes known as "The Momotaro". If a second from Momotaro arrived, it will get another name. I find it interesting how people go about naming their koi. Dick's post is full of poetic Japanese names descriptive of the fish. Others tend to select names descriptive of the koi's behavior... or at least a behavior when it was young. Some names are fanciful; some are after people. I have a couple that have not had a name stick. A Showa bred by Nogami needs a name. All the other Showa have one. I tend to think of it as "Nogami", but that does not seem feminine enough. One will come in time, I'm sure. They always do.
