Sanke Development

Wanted to share this Sanke's development. Breeder is Hosokai. Sex: still not sure??
Pic 1: Feb 2006 (Bought as Nissai) 35cm
Pic 2: Oct 2006: 40cm
Pic 3: April 2007: 60cm

So what do you think. The last pic is not great but it just did not want to stay in the bowl. Do you think the shiro will come back? Worth holding on to? Will the body fill out?

I also thought male. But now it's 60cm and still no signs, smooth pecs and gill covers. And now it's starting to add body. So I'm not sure. Is it not growing a bit too fast to say male?

I think boy as well. It's hard to diagnose the discoloration. sometimes feed or water has to do with it....

There has been quite a rapid growth so hopefully the discolaration is due to that . The Matsonasuke sanke grew like that and did not look like female till they reached the age of 4. It could be that it did not spend its first 2 winters in heated pond so showing its growth now
Regards
Eugene

If you have fed high protein growth food, this may have caused the shiroji to turn slightly yellowish. At first glance, it looks very much like a male body, but koi from some bloodlines do grow longer before they grow wider. Your dealer may be able to tell you more. Anyway, if you bowl the koi, you should be able to sex it, after all it's already 60cm.

High protien food it got a lot of this past summer... So I'm hoping on wheatgerm this winter the shiro should wash out clean again. It's got all the characteristics of matsonusuke to me but I hav'nt seen many in real life so it's a hard comparison. I milked it but no sperm came out, and as I said, pecs and gills are smooth, so I've got my money on female right now. At this stage I'm hoping the best is yet to come on this one.

These aren't certain indicators in fall like they are in spring, I believe. So, you may have to wait until next spring (October for you?) to see better if gills or pecs are rough or if there is milt.
