I looked at another 5" Ochiba today. I may go back and buy it.

Billy: I was organizing photos and came across this one... a tub of koi Kevin brought in. Your Ochiba seems right at home with the Goshiki.

When my big chagoi suddenly turned over and died three years back I decided I would like to replace it with an ochiba as these grow large like a chag, are docile but are a bit more interesting to look at. Trouble is i am a picky sod to please and it took me more than two years of searching before i finally found a fish that pleased me. I bought it on the spot. In general I find the patterns on most ochiba flawed or messy but this fish has taken my heart. Though a male he has grown quite well in the last 14 months and has now gone from 40 cm when I bought him to 56 cm. I would hope that in a year or two it will be closer to 65. That would please me fine.

Here is what he looked like when I bought him.

Here is now the same fish 14 months later. The pattern has broken a bit on the shoulder but all in all I am still pleased as I don't find this too distracting. The recticulation just blows me away.

No kidding about the reticulation. Patience really paid off for you.

Thanx Larry,

It is one of the reasons I prefer to avoid ginrin Ochiba. I find the ginrin really destracts/detracts the reticulation on the fish. Sadly I have the feeling that a large numer of Ochiba (and Chagoi) are ginrin which made the search all the more difficult.

BTW the breeder is Oofuji.

that is a beautiful koi scott.....interesting how light the ochiba color was when it started and how root beer brown it turned as it aged. I just recently added a first time ochiba to my flock. I got lucky and found a young lady.
I'm in the business of really growing her like cracy and don't wish to put a net in there for a photograph. I really like the koi and wish I'd have done this sooner. When I acquired her she was around 10 inches and i've put about an inch a month on her. You'll see her when we get together.

Thats funny! I considered buying that goshiki as well. I ended up getting one from the photo he had posted of goshiki.

Very kind of you to say so Dick,

Part of the difference in color is the light I took it in. Part is due to circumstances. The first picture was when if first came home and it was late, overcast and the picture was taken with a flash. bear in mind that the fish had been in a dealers (indoor) vat for several weeks.
In the second picture it was in full sunlight, no flash and the fish as been in daylight for 12 months.
