To show this fish in 1 month is wasting your time. The fish needs to go into a concrete pond to finish. It's that so-called Japanese growing cycle. I would wait until the finish comes back up then show the fish.

Dear all,

Koicop : Thanks for your advice, i will leave her at least a week to de-stress her, then i will see what can i do with it.

Aquitori : Yes, i actually feel the same as you, as i don't want to waste her time being packed here and there. Yet, since this is a local fish with unknown oyagoi hence i have no idea about her characteristics and traits yet. If her hi finished within a month, and the judging method is measureing 'potential' rather than 'finished' koi. I will enter it.

Anyway, thankx alot for all your help !

=Dimas

Judging is always on level of finish on the judging day, NEVER on potential. Potential is a big IFFY which may never be realised.

I think also a hobbyist has to know what kind of judging, who's judging, to present the best fish to do well at a show.

Aquitori,

What does "daihonmei" mean? I'm sorry if it's a stupid question which should belong to the other thread..

While that might be the correct 'textbook' answer, I've read that when breeders are used as judges (Shinkokai shows, dealer shows, etc.) they're often unable to judge to that strict standard because their livelihood has been based on spotting and evaluating the potential in koi.

For them, the 'best fish on the day' very much includes quality (and potential); it is not based solely on finish. And, truly, how could it not be that way for them?

ppp . . .

According to Brian: It means "sure thing" or "ringer". Daihonmei means something along the lines of like "the true one" or "the real McCoy".

You may be right there, Don, but I think the koi still has to be relatively finished to win a keenly contested show. An 80% finished koi with brighter potential may edge out a 90% finished koi with less potential, but surely a 50% finished koi with fantastic potential cannot win? In the first place, such tategoi wouldn't have been unveiled in Japanese shows till they're much closer to finishing. Standards may be different in other parts of the world, tho..

Well of course they would.

And don't just think about the GC -- think about all the competitions going on in all the sizes/varieties.

With ZNA vs. Shinkokai judges there can be huge differences of opion. It's only natural.

I agree with you, here there are certain cases where judges prefer potential over finished. Yet, depends on case by case basis, i have to wait for any news who will be judging later.

Anyway, i feed her Saki Spirulina 3 times a week, her hi is slightly better (especially on her head)

Thanx all,
