the problem with answering a question like that is that japanese to english looses a lot in translation! Then not knowing the context even adds to the difficulty. I consider young koi that have hatched but not yet completed their first growth summer as fry.

I assume you are joking?

Fry comes from middle English "frie" which has to do with seed or descendant. Pretty much all I can get from definitions is that it is the "young of fish". How about something like too small to eat or use as bait?

How about "larger than an unhatched egg, smaller than a fingerling?" (kinda like the old "bigger than a breadbox, smaller than a car" analogy...)

Right you are! Fry is an English term. Fingerling is another. These are descriptive words to describe stages of development more than references to age.
In a more science oriented observation of koi/carp we have :
1) egg
2) larvae ( hatched but with yolk sac attached. A three or four day life form. All organs are not fully formed)
3) fry ( the hunting stage where active predation begins/happens as the organs all work for normal function)
4) Juvenile koi- all pre-sexually mature fish
5) mature koi- adult koi capable of reproduction.

I use "fry" to refer to a koi from the time of hatching until it is "tosai", but with other fish I use it to refer to hatchlings until they they are recognizable as a small version of the adult. ... I had not previously thought about how ambiguous a term it is.

I don't know that I've ever heard a clear timeline distinction between Fry and Fingerling... Tosai to Nissai to Gosai is plain and simple, but all fry are technically tosai as are fingerlings... Our most recent hatch is officially 2 days old, tiny, and not fully formed. Our prior hatch is 4 1/2 weeks old, average length 1 1/2-3" and well formed. The newborns are definitely fry, but when do the others start being fingerlings??? One of them is as long as my middle finger now. Is he a fingerling, or still a Tobie Fry?

Larry, Larry, Larry

As big as your "middle" finger????????? I thought this site was rated PG(13)!!LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!
A game warden used to tell me trout the size of his "index" finger were considered fingerling, but as far as koi go, i would have to say that before harvest maybe they are "fry" and after harvest they are tosai. I do however think the Japanese call them all tosai until they are nisai, period!! We make too much of things that, to the Japanese, are very simply stated. Just my two cents!

Russ

I hear Wasabi mustard is good too!!!!!!!
