The real problem here is the long term affect of the carp. Could something like this lead to a ban on imports? This is what has happened in Australia.

That's why that guy is a newscaster! LOL - He really should be on the stage instead.

As far as the carp problem goes, I remember growing up in San Francisco in the '50s and '60s. There are a group of lakes known as Lake Merced. I knew one of the Game Wardens there and one year, they decided to poison the lake with Rutenone(sp) to get rid of the carp and goldfish species that were causing a problem. They must have caught over 500 fish over 10 pounds out of just one of the three lakes in one afternoon. Problem with the process was, they killed a lot of very large mature trout over 5 pounds as well.

Russ, you're probably right and this would be a very ignorant and poorly informed choice of our legislators if they banned ALL carp species. Every body of water has some form of carp or sucker fish in it. Never fished a lake that didn't, and I used to be on the Bass Tournament Circuit back in the early '80s, so I've fished most all of the waters from some in SoCal to the Oregon border. Obviously, there are varieties, such as the "flat head carp" described in the video that are even more prolific than other types. That doesn't mean they're going to take over the world. Simply banning ALL CARP would do nothing to eradicate the problem that currently exists in our waterways now. They've been there for probably well over 100 years - yet now their a nuisance? Maybe someone is creating the nuisance without it being of serious concern.

this video offer another look of the problem. question is that this flat head carp was escaped from a fish farm during a flood which means there is a commercial value in it. how come no one in illinois catch these fish and sale them for a profit? doesn't seem like anyone locally want to eat them.

my suggestion on another board was to get seining boats, and catch them, freeze them for the shipment to africa, and feed the poor and hungry. I would think you could make a major dent with all the fish in there.

WA-A-A-AY over the line. Keep your naive politics to yourself, Ethan. Or on the "other board" where I won't see it. They have a pukey thingy there right?

This post has been edited and cleaned up extensively by my computer's FOSSIL program. It was a very long post.

I showed this post to one of my Uganda co-workers here and he said he doesnt like carp...HAHAHAHAHA...But then again he also stated, why does it just have to be Africa, why not the "Poor People of the World"?

Why dont they feed it to the poor here first then send it to Africa... The focus should be here in the states not else where. But then again, getting Americans to eat fish in general is already hard dont you think?

It doesn't have to be Africa...but it's not a terrible idea. My brother in law hunts deer, elk and all that kind of stuff. He often donates the meat to homeless shelters...etc. I have never tasted carp, but if I was starving to death...i'm sure I could learn to like it!! I don't see how it is a BAD idea to help the needy, no matter where they live. Nothing wrong with your suggestion Ethan...the idea came from a good place!!!
