Smile Kohaku, Living Art Revisited

I've been gone for a good long while as Spring has commanded my entire attention to the farm and family. Now that Summer breathes her fiery breath, manual labor is tapering off and giving way to more indoor pursuits.

Art is consuming a large part of my time now that's too too hot to be out there planting, pulling weeds, digging digging digging in the earth and playing midwife or trainer to a plethora of animals. The pond is taking it's time balancing though I finally have some clear water instead of the tepid algae blooms that seem to go nowhere very fast. And so out has come the camera and pics old and new have been worked and transformed to what I feel brings out the true nature of Nishikigoi....

Here's Nepenthe, my big girl that is now 21", demanding the big nightcrawler she just knows must be in my grasp:

Nepenthe again, this time lazily coming up to see what goodie I must be there to give her:

Here's the Tigerlily, Zen and Nepenthe enjoying their new pond:

...and Origami, the Tigerlily and Nepenthe, my biggest hams:

Tigerlily and Origami in the QT--old pic that I didn't think I could do but with practice, learned how:

And lastly, Nepenthe....she and the Tigerlily have been competing for the most expressions a koi can produce the past few months, and I think this girl has proven to be a very hard act to follow...

The MIA,

Marie

Welcome back and thanks for posting these amazing pieces of artwork. You have a natural talent for it, so, why are you wasting your time on other endeavors!? You could provide the hobby with a plethera(sp) of unique items that people in general, not just within our small group of kichi, would think worth purchasing. Keep up the good work!

Hi Mike! *hugs* Thank you, and happy to be back.

I'd love to provide the hobby with a plethora (yep, spelling right ) of unique items, but bubble girl here doesn't get around much. *LOL* I'm doing an experiment on eBay to see if the general population likes 'em on t-shirts. Sent out a few samples of my work but so far, no response. Did make enough for a couple of drives through Starbucks, though...

So I get my jollies by posting 'em to give a few kichis some smiles and desktop art.

Marie

You know what I need? More pics. Pics of different fish. Don't get me wrong, I love my fish, but I'd sure like to be doing some different varieties. Like JNorth's tancho. I did it once as a watercolor--I'd love to do it again in this technique. Or some casual shots of past champs--the straight show shots present a nice conformation, but is pretty boring otherwise. I need faces! Anybody want to donate something for immortalization like this? It's fun to see what they turn into...

Very nice. Isn't it curious how this technique adds a dimension that reality misses.

Ayup. Isn't it? It's amazing the things I see as I enhance the pixels before layering in texture that I'd never notice with the naked eye--kinda like those pics I redid of the Japanese pearl ginrin babies where we could see that the "pearl" was actually at the top corner of the scale, not in the center.

I like how it enhances and intensifies scaleage, sashi and kiwa. It's easier to see anomalies than it would be with the naked eye, even if the fish is bowled.

Here's one of most of my non-gosankes that I just did. Jumanji has gone through a lot of changes this spring. Check out his odd Ochiba-ness now:

Another thing that is nice about this process concerning the evaluation of fish--it intensifies underlying colors and pattern that haven't emerged yet and is almost imperceptible to the eye otherwise. I notice this mostly in the underlying sumi of my Showas and the Kumonryu longfin, but I'm also watching some beni in my Kohaks as the edges either develop or recede. Fascinating...and puts into a perspective that I can understand from what I'm learning from the masters here.

Mike, do you have any pics of fish you'd like to see from this perspective? I'd be glad to do it for you.

Marie
