Now, the discussion is getting somewhere. Those who have had the chance to see such kois can know what conformation, and quality means. The real kicker is the volume of a very large koi. I believe this koi may have been the most imposing in the history of the BKKS and she was in top shape on that day. The judges evaluate the koi on the day on the competition. If she had come in all stressed and bloodshot; that would have been another story.

It is also good to note that there were two other judges who voted against her. But the majority liked her.

I also like to add that this is the current judging criteria for show kois. Until some very influential opinion leaders come along and change mindsets, this is how things will be.

Yes, without doubt you are correct in the order I would place the 3 Koi.

It is not size alone that would put Bentley ahead of the BKKS GC.

The male Kohaku would not have achieved a placing, i.e. a 1st, 2nd or 3rd, in size 7 Kohaku at last weekend's BKKS National, IMHO.

Here are the rest of the koi that were in a competition for the BKKS National GC this year in photo's i took on the Saturday Morning.

Incidently i ran a poll on my normal BB overnight on the saturday before the results were known it ended up like so:-

Koi 1 (Goshiki) - 6%
Koi 2 (Kohaku) - 31%
Koi 3 (showa) - 6%
Koi 4 (sanke) - 0%
Koi 5 (Kohaku) - 2%
Koi 6 (GC) - 25%
Koi 7 - (kohaku) 27%

Now this to me shows that pictures do this koi absolutly no justice as the GC was a clear winner in my mind having seen it in the flesh Saturday morning.

Regards,
Greg.

[quote=ppp;83905]I'm really starting to wonder who's representing the Pattern side. Everyone is on the conformation side, including myself. So who are we arguing against? Kong, those 2 fish won AJKS/ZNA (right?) because of their size, body conformation and quality of their beni and shiroji. That they had a nice balanced big fish pattern is an added bonus only, but nevertheless a bonus.

First of all diffrent races have diffrent tastes in composition . Both fish have patterns and looking at a swimming fish a simple 2 step looks nicer especially in larger size . Now looking at a stationary fish the pattern becomes more pronounced and pleasing Going by old Rinko magazines the Japanese have changed in my opinion . One the fish are a little larger but the other is that besides dealers ,breeders and the very rich or hotels most people can not afford to have ponds in Japan so the market is 0 imports and maximum exports . The fish that are purchased for high prices get the green and so influence the taste in Japanese appreciation .
As I see it

Eugene

I pulled kohaku examples that were not in the show just to be discreet. Now that we have the mother load in front of us, I would have to say candidly, I was quite suprised kohaku #2 did not win.

The BKKS's 'competition' created 7 candidates for GC, the reality is that there were only 3!

1 koi with 12 votes
1 koi with 1 vote
1 koi with 1 vote

14 judges and an almost unanimous result. No controversy, no second ballots. It's surprising their is any challenge to it being a valid GC.

I visited the show ground on Friday evening whilst the future GC was still in it's plastic bag. It glowed and was incredibly imposing. I had the benefit of having seen the Koi in 2003 at Momotaro Koi Farm and 2005 at the BKKS National so knew some aspects of the Koi. Other challengers had been released in their vats by this time.

I remarked to a number that I believed their was one Koi that could take GC and that it wouldn't surprise me for it to be unanimous but such a comment shouldn't discredit the other Koi, this one just stood head and shoulders above the others in my opinion.

Having had a few beers on Friday night I made my prediction public by stating that the particular Koi would be GC on KoiChat.com

A worthy champion, a Koi which has improved and developed immensly since arriving in the UK back in 2004/5.

Hi Mark,

Just one small point. The Goshiki was not put up by the judges - it was an administrative error.
We were tasked with providing six contenders, which we did. We understand that our paperwork didn't specify which koi in the vat containing the Goshiki so the admins nominated both occupants, thereby making a total of 7. We had selected the other koi - a Kohaku I believe.

That is also as I understand it, rather than going into details I simply referred to the "BKKS' competition".

Roll on some competitions at the SE Show, that's what I say!

Lighting for stills is standard on camera flash.

Natural lighting for videos.

All I know of the Kohaku's existence before it arrived in the UK is that it spent 2003 growing season in the 1500 ton pond at Momotaro.
