General thoughts on this male sanke

Hello, I'm just looking for general thoughts on this male sanke. This is not a show fish, but I think it's special in that it is the offspring of third generation domestic stock.

How old?

The Sumi is nice. I'm not sure about the Hi. The head has none of the yellow tone I would expect, which makes me wonder about the age. The way in which the Sumi has emerged along the base of the dorsal is reminiscent of Showa... and the Sumi lurking on the head contributes to the effect. The tejima is about perfect for adding presence. A bright, cheerful koi.

You must have an idea of how he will develop based on siblings and parent koi?

My guess would be that it is a Nisai.

Mike,

He was spawned last April. The sumi is very powerful and it's the placement of the beni which first made me pass on him. But, after a second look, I felt that I had something special here that might be useful in future pairings. The depth and quality of its sumi and beni, along with his excellent shiroji, is something I'd like to retain. The clues that I have on how he will develop come from the male in this pairing. At five years of age he just gets better each year.

Got any picture of Daddy???

It would be interesting to get a look at the father. The sumi is very rich and appears to be of the same quality whether the placement is on beni or shiroji. Like you said, not a show fish, but it does show much about pairing potential and the direction your generational work is headed.
Is this another from the pairing that produced the Sumi with Marusome Kiwa???

I like your observations and especially the way you can explain . The only thing that bothers me is the third generation . I had some really good koi ten years ago but due the great advances in the last ten years I sold them all off and started again . Fish which I purchased now for $2000 would have been Japanese chamions 10 years ago or so I think .
Regards
Eugene

Hi Richard, thanks for sharing the photo.....

A coupla thoughts on your koi....the white is a nice bone china look and the black is incredibly inky.

I'm seeing marusome ( rounded full color scales in black and red) and that kinda surprises me.

Sakai-san who has now stabilized the condition and has been breeding it that way for several years is rightfully proud of the accomplishment. I'd be half tempted to get a female of his that's 3 or younger and mix it in with your male.

At his seminar this spring he taught with his bloodline , marusome will form
on the sumi and beni closest to the belly and starting back by the tail and as the koi ages the condition advances, moving forward and up till all the koi is that way. males he said from 3-5 yrs and females 5-8 to complete. naturally the longer it takes the better.

Mike, the beni has a scale of sashi, so there's depth there and on the head the beni is real clean edged both for and aft of the first pattern. Sakai-san did say that with HIS bloodline koi, a quick development of marusome was not a good sign as far as beni development was concerned. I only mention that in passing as conversation for those who missed the seminar.

I think time will tell with Richard's koi. But I definetely think it is a koi to hang on to another year to see what develops. I'm really impressed with what Richard has accomplished with his breeding program in such a "relatively" short time. I think it's about time we give some credit to some hard working domestic breeders that have a dream and are actively working it!
