I know it's weird, but sometimes they haven't even been entered in the competition.
Don, All Grand Champions from any AKCA show are eligable to enter into the Champion of Champions photo contest, photo's are submitted by the club or hobbiest. Some of us don't even bother to submit a photo, since it is based on the photographer's picture quality.

We were also at the seminar, and Dukes picture was by far superior to Perry's picture. I too have seen both of these fish in person, and Duke's kohaku wins hands down. Duke had cared for his Kohaku ,it was in his pond for a few years, The other kohaku has never even been in its owners pond.

Have seen both fish at shows. Dukes kohaku is better than Perry kohaku.

A couple of other points

First off, I have never seen either koi "live." Second, I arrived to the seminar late and didn't even get to cast my vote. Sooooooo, my opinion is just that, my opinion.

I will say this, the pictures projected are different than those printed and voted upon by the certified judges. The pictures projected were jepg file formats, a computerized interpretation of the coloration which many times may be different than actual.

the pictures printed were all 35 mm. the problem there is in the printing process. Something about blue backgrounds throws things off a tad. A much more informed photographers taught me that when printing koi pictures (blue backgrounds), to ask for the developer to adjust "2 yellows" out of the picture. This then corrects the process for the blue background.

So, regardless of the method of pictures, they are still pictures and volume, size, and true colors are often times an illusion.....but the koi still have to be judged on the picture for this award.

I think one photo was taken in natural sun light by the koi photoguru keokoi and the other by enhanced indoor shop lights...

Ok so I'm not going to take the photos off the AKCA site for use here but please check them out yourself. Remember this is a photo contest.

Interesting photo comparison. Perry's looks to be the larger, with even deep Beni and excellent body. Duke's appears smaller, with a patchiness to the Hi and what seems to be a bit of staining to the Shiro. Those who have seen the fish know better.

If you read the recent issue of Koi USA Goshiki photo judging discussion, I think it becomes clear that without the fish live in front of you, it is not possible to have a consensus on the cumulative weighting of the factors involved in evaluating a koi.

I think this can be summed up nicely by saying - THIS IS WHY we have koi shows. They are real, they are accurate and they are educational. Same water, same lighting conditions, same tank types, same jury of judges. There are some things the internet can't do and pictures alone, can't portray.
The photo contests are fun and a great source of pride for the winner. But we have to all remember we are looking at pictures of fish, that's all. Old timers aways joke that the award should go to the fish AND the photographer! A beautiful photo of a beautiful fish is the best description of the winner. But a beautiful fish with a poor photo is not a looser. - JR
