If you read the recent issue of Koi USA Goshiki photo judging discussion, I think it becomes clear that without the fish live in front of you, it is not possible to have a consensus on the cumulative weighting of the factors involved in evaluating a koi.
Looking over the photo's I couldn't agree more. The one that stood out to me in terms of photographic injustice to a fish was Dan and Gene's Kohaku. I've seen that big girl up close and personal so I KNOW how she looks. The pictures make her look decent, but not outstanding. (No, I'm not plugging their Koi as the "should have been the winner" fish. Just pointing out the poor representation of an outstanding Koi. I guess that is the price we pay for living in such a geographically large country. It would be a beautiful thing to get all the nominees together for a real competition, but it is completely impractical.

Only 18 pix submitted out of, what, 30 odd shows? What does that say?

Jim . . .

Thanks for putting up the links to the pix. While I enjoyed looking at them, it's just a darn shame so much effort has been put into something that so poorly captures what so many have worked so hard to achieve.

My two nickels(a penny is now worthless)

I was at San Diego show and saw one of these koi 'up close and personal'.
The other I sure would love to see in person. (as I feel about alot of koi )

Rest assured I was also at the AKCA Seminar and perused pics and voted.
Trust me on this one - it is a photo contest ONLY. You do not get the total koi appreciation from a photo. Never. No real fukurin, no tsuya, no skin finish hinted in most of these photos.

Why don't we all put our energy into seeing that each of 34 odd AKCA shows spend some time taking their pics and submitting them ALL for this next year?

Hmmmm.... if the owner of the koi does not care enough to hire a professional photographer, why bother?
