Perfect example is Blackwater creek being part owned by Suda. If Sudasan brings some breeders here and breeds them in Florida...I still consider these domestic koi. I guess to be an imported koi, they have to actually be imported from somewhere else...sounds logical to me

a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.....a good koi is still a good koi no matter where it was born.

Well I'm not as bright as some, but I was also wondering--- if a Frenchman moves to Northern California and brings french grapes with him, and he buys a plot of land on the left coast, is his resulting wine production a French wine? I'm confused? I mean what would be wrong with marketing his product as French wine? He could even charge as much as French wine and get a better mark up than California wine growers?? I must be thick? JR

I'm with JR. As long as you live in the US and buy a koi that was born in the US it is a domestic koi. Now if you live in Canada and buy a koi from a US breeder it would be an import but not a Japanese import but a US import.

. I think I could do the same with baluga caviar vs American black sturgeon roe, or Russian furs vs US farm raised? Nature and geographic circumstance, along with generational experience has a huge effect on these things I think? But then again, I could just be thick? JR

I think the best answer would be its a US bred koi that was bred by a Japanese breeder in the US.

Koi is koi, some perfer Japanese, some perfer American....I think the real question is should we pay Japanese Koi prices for American Koi?

Here's one I like.
Lorval French Wine. Grapes grown in France, Squeezed and fermented there as well. Vatted and moved to a cargo ship to start the voyage to the Texas gulf coast where it is offloaded, finishes the aging process, and is bottled in Texas, USA. Sold at 1/2 the price of California Wine of comparable quality...
If we could spawn Koi in Niigata, Load the eggs on a hatchery boat the next day, ship them to the west coast while they hatched, cull at the port of entry in San Francisco, would they still be Japanese imports??? or bastard step children born in international waters
