Mike, Your right it seams pricing has really gone up this year. We are limited when shopping via web sites and word of mouth. Yet for most of us this is the only way. I agree these funds should fetch a nice two or three year old with potential. This is what I am hoping to find.

A number of dealers in the U.S. are finding sales off a bit this year. The peak season for water garden sales is past. I'm told the higher-end purchasers seem more picky than usual. $4,000 is a significant sum. I expect there are some koi listed at $6,000 or so that a dealer might be willing to sell at one-third off. So, the range of possibilities may be greater than it seems. This is a price range where buying from photos should be avoided if possible. Check the price of airfare for a same day round trip to see in person before making a final decision. The cost may be surprisingly low, and you may be able to save shipping cost by taking the fish home instead of luggage.

Mike, Great advise, but work prohibits a trip. I have to rely on photo's, the seller and my budget. I talked to Ray Ables about one of his kohaku but the koi I am interested in are well above my budget, as many of Rays' are although of very high caliber. I ran across another kohaku I liked, but it was damaged during last Novembers shipments from Japan. The pectral fin was broken, can you shed any light on how pectral fins heal.
Thanks,

Hi Bob,

That's one of Kevin's (Genki) Hoshikin mudpond koi. It's the same thing he did last year with Ooyama. The price of the koi include the mud pond fee for the first year so you'll be getting a nisai koi or you can choose to keep it in the mud for future years, assuming the breeder agrees.

That one in particular is sold though. I remember asking a couple of weeks after they became available and he had already sold 8 of 15 available.

Has any one tried this lately? Will it be possible to check the fish w/ your trip home?

If you meen on a trip from Japan, that would be quite amazing if you could do it. First, you need an import/export license from Fish and Game, then you need to get a permit from the USDA, then you have to have someone in Japan arrange for an authorized Vet inspection and the necessary paper work, then you have to make sure it gets on your flight and finally when you get back to the US you have to come into an authorized port of entry and have an Aphis vet inspect you paper work and your import broker needs to clear the fish through USDA, Fish and Game and then Customs.

Good Luck.

I am pretty sure Mike M. was referring to a one day trip to a USA dealer, NOT Japan. Also to ship fish within the USA you need to be a recognized shipper through the airlines.. As far as sending them as part of your baggage, not allowed anymore.. They would need to go through cargo. But if you find a fish you like, I am sure the dealer could arrange all the paperwork, for you to drop it off at cargo, before you catch your flight home.
