As The Ochiba Changes....

I've heard countless reports of how Ochibas are prone to darkening like the fade-to-black fx at the end of a movie scene, but has anyone seen the reverse?

Feast your eyes as Jumanji drops his sumi like an old suit gone out of style...

When I bought him:

What I'm used to seeing:

What he is becoming:

And an art print that almost makes him pretty while he changes clothes:

I wonder....is he going back to his Asagi roots? Even his netting is leaving and turning white. Anybody got any ideas of what's going on? Do Ochiba go shiro muji?
Marie

Looks to be a mix between a Matsakawbake(sp?) and Ochiba.

Love these 'changing' threads -- and this is such a fun example to watch.

*nodnod* a Muttsukawabake x Ochiba, Tonio. I was so hoping that the dark bronze/green plates over black netting over silver-shimmer skin was going to hold (though his pattern has always been crappy). When he went dark and pug-ugly I just threw up my hands and sarcastically thought, "Well that's $35 well spent on eBay." But when he started changing in the other direction it was like watching layers peeled off one by one and to me, this is fascinating stuff.

Today's installment on "The Change" as taken this morning...

Every day is something new....

Interesting! I would like a koi that can change on a daily basis based on what my taste/mood is that day! That would be awesome!

i have one expierance with a large ochiba shigure female for 6 -7 months the brown on the fish is very weak and washy a very light caramel colour. This is when she is developing eggs. Once she spawns she becomes a different fish the brown is so defined very very brown and looks superb. So the production off eggs must of robbed her off those nutrients and colour enhancers ,

That's cool to watch how your ochiba is changing. I like the darker coloring. Nice art print.

Isn't it? Other varieties that can and do change, sometimes radically from season to season, is the Matsubawabake and the Kumoryu. Ochiba should be rather stable in comparison, but in my limited experience I've seen that they will often darken in summer if their ponds don't get enough shade and then lighten during the winter. I'm thinking that Jumanji, who was not produced from a good breeding plan, is not typical to type.

Got a pic or two, Steve? Is it just the pattern that is rootbeer, or did the whole fish go that way? And, does it ever change in winter?
