In search for knowledge I would highly suggest for those newbies out there to start their collection of UK DVDs too...It is one thing to read, but it is another to apply what is learned hands on...

Fully agree on the DVDs!!! A classic is the "best of" from the old Living Jewels video series. There is also one pond construction. The newer Koi Keepers series are also good.

Before purchasing a VHS tape or DVD from New Vision (or other) what video standards your equipment supports. Video in North America is the NTSC standard. Video in Europe is the PAL standard. You can VHS players and DVD players that play both. Also on the DVD players sold in the US..they are programed to ONLY play region 1 DVDs (North American market). The New Vision DVDs are marked as region 0...which should play on any player (that will handle PAL). No so if your DVD player refuses all be region 1 DVDs.

Solution.. get a DVD player like one of the Oppo models OPPO OPDV971H 720p/1080i Up-Converting DVD Player with DVI Output My handles both NTSC and PAL and does not care about the region of the DVD.

Most of the multi function DVD players out on the market are really cheap...from $29-40. The DVDs are a great asset to any starting koi library.

WOW!!!
You guys are full of great ideas.I hope they keep coming.
I took Mike M.'s advice, I actually ordered a 2 yr. subscription to KoiUSA. Unforunately, the 1st issue will not arrive until 6-8 weeks from now. Funny thing is they are located in Escondido Calif. only 5 mins. up the freeway from me. I wish I could just go pick them up.
As for the obtaining the 3 earlier issues(Jan/Feb,Mar/Apr,May/June) from 2007 I called the number they gave me and left a message. Hopefully I can get these sooner. I will try some of the local pond stores to see if they have any back copies.

Great idea about the AKCA pamphlet. I'll check their web site.

"Koi2Kichi - skip amazon etc and go straight to source eg :- Peter Waddington Infiltration - Exclusively Koi - Home and order off him in the UK"
Great idea, however, they cannot export the book to the USA. They suggested KoiUSA.com, but their site didn't have the soft cover available for sale. Any other suggestions on where to look for the soft cover?

Thanks for the heads up on the DVD idea too. Couldn't have come at a more appropriate time since we are about to purchase a new one.
Thanks to all of you,
Vince

The editor of KoiUSA hangs out here from time to time so maybe he'll see your post and help you out.

As for the UK DVDs that you can buy from Mystickoi.com and other places they play fine on any computer I have tried them on and thats quite a few. So there is no need to buy a DVD player to watch them as long as you don't mind watching it on your computer.

be careful with the cheap DVD and/or tape units. You need one that is both region free and can convert PAL to NSTC. Ideally it should also upconvert to HDTV resolution so you can get a nice large photo. Can't beat those Oppo units.

Koi2Kichi is a two volume set, hardcover only. There are two versions out there... one is the standard hard cover, which usually retails for around $175. The other is a limited signed edition with metal covers, and a metal case (expensive... around $350).

Kind Regards,
Bill
Bill, do you have both of these in stock?

Thanks jnorth ,for the headsup about the editor. I was able to find the March/April issue and the May/June issue's for 2007. So as of now I am just missing the first issue of this year.
The pond store I found these at had a few older issues would they be something I should consider picking up too?

Thank you for the tip about where to find the DVD's (Mystickoi.com). I'll be checking soon.

Have a great evening,
Vince

What does that hack know?

Try USA Koi - One of the largest selections of Japan's most premier Koi "usakoi.com" for the soft cover of Koi Kichi...still the best overall koi book on the market IMHO. I paid $125 new for the hard cover and was worth well more than that over the years...still keep one of the 2 copies I have right here next to me at the pc.
