Hi Everyone, I am a newbie to ponding. I would like to build a Koi only pond. 2' above ground and 2'-2.5' below ground. Using treated 4x4 lumber (for the above ground frame) ,plywood, isulation, pre-liner, liner, BD, TPR's, Skimmer etc...I don't want to go on til I learn a little more. I have been reading a lot of posts here on this forum and am learning a whole lot. This forum is the BEST!!! ![]() I was hoping that you maybe able to suggest books that I may 1) purchase or 2) check out at the local library. I also plan on subscribing to Koi oreintented Magizines too. I want to become as educated about this fun hobby as possible. I have been looking in your archive library too. What great articles. I would like to plan as much on paper as possible before starting to dig "the hole". I plan on looking up our local koi club too. My wife is becoming frustrated with the amount of time that I am on the computer reading the posts on this forum. So, reading material that I could read while sitting next to her on the couch would sure go a long way to earning me some points .Thanx in advance, Vince

Thanx, for the suggestions and the link. I can't wait to go to the library tomorrow. I'll look for Koi Kichi2 first. Then continue down the list. This is an example of why I really like this forum. When someone posts a Q, there is a response. I am new at ponding and using a discussion forum. Thank you for making me feel welcomed. I look forward to getting to know you all better as well as learning from all of you too!! Would it be worth the money investing in purchasing Koi Kich2? ![]() I think I am with An Ly, about learning as much as possible here and not buying Koi Kichi. I hope Koi Kichi2 isn't in the same $ range. ![]() Thanks again,

Koi2Kichi - skip amazon etc and go straight to source eg :- Peter Waddington Infiltration - Exclusively Koi - Home and order off him in the UK - unfortunatly you guys are paying the price for the strong pound at the moment which is nearly $2 to the pound. Alternativly check out E-bay / koi sites for 2nd hand versions - i picked up my copies this way and only paid $120 for both books inc p + p. These books are a must have IMHO even if they end up a just reference material.

Also....many clubs have a library. So join at least one local club and check out the library contents. Also you might be able to borrow books from other club members. But don't be surprised if they don't loan out their autographed Koi Kichi or Koi 2 Kichi. Our autographied copies don't leave the house. ![]()

For a person planning to build a first pond suited to raising koi, I do not believe there is a single book that will help get them over the knowledge bar. Koi Kichi is superior to Koi 2 Kichi for that person, although it is showing its age in pond technology. The fundamentals are on point and surpass many 'koi books' published more recently. Beginning a couple of issues ago, Steve Childers has been writing a series of articles on pond design in KoiUSA. Once he gets through these, there will be a solid overview that can give a person the ability to evaluate what they are reading. Steve's series inherently is geared to a top-of-the-line pond, but the teraching can be adapted to less costly liner ponds, etc. Much of the koi and pond literature in the U.S. is hopelessly out of date and overly influenced by watergarden/goldfish pond design. AKCA has a small, inexpensive booklet on pond design and construction put together a few years ago. IMO, it tried to hard to cause no offense to anyone, and as a result does not provide clear guidance regarding the problems and limitations of some of the types of filters, etc. discussed. However, if you get Koi Kichi, the AKCA pond design/construction book and read KoiUSA from the Jan-Feb 2007 issue forward, I think you will get a decent DIY education. BTW, you will hear that the least costly koi pond is the one that is done 'right' the first time. I absolutely agree. However.... my current pond is about as close to being 'right' as any I'm likely to ever have. It is the third pond intended for koi at that spot in the yard. If I had not started with a much less costly pond, I'd never have gotten a koi pond. In retrospect, I should have done a modest-sized pond 'right', and reserved a spot in the yard for the large pond in the future. Then I'd have the two ponds I wish I had now. ![]()

The original Koi Kichi is available in soft cover now. Usually runs around $45 new. Koi2Kichi is a two volume set, hardcover only. There are two versions out there... one is the standard hard cover, which usually retails for around $175. The other is a limited signed edition with metal covers, and a metal case (expensive... around $350). Kind Regards, Bill
