Feedback on this Kohaku Please

Could you please give me some feedback on these three Kohakus? I'm considering entering them in the Atlanta Show in Sept. First three pictures are of an 18" 3 yr old male. Fourth picture is of a 19" 3 yr old female. Last three pictures are of 16" 2 yr old male.

The female shows Brady's Beni. She needs a bit more maturing, but I like the look.

Very good Mike! The first 2 are Brady's and the last is an Ogata. That's a picture of her last year during the harvest. Brady said that her beni has tightened up quite a bit since then!

I know that I'm not going to win GC with these, but this will be my first time to show!

The 18" male kohak in the first set of pics doesnt quite have the body to compete against females at that size. The female has the body but the finish doesnt look to be there at that size. The last kohak is the same a the first kohak. I might be worng on some of my opinions, but I really dont know what the competition is, so it is hard to say.

Who will be judging this koi show?

AKCA Judges for the koi and longfin competitions:
Head Judge: Nicole Lembke
Assistant Judge: Debbie Hester
Candidate Judge: Jan Thompson

Judge for the goldfish competition:
Head Judge: Art Lembke

You can find out more information about the show by visiting Atlanta Koi Club and selecting the show link. If you go to the newsletter link and then chose Oct 06 you can see last years winners. I didn't see how many koi were entered last year, but I did see there were 70 goldfish entered.

Looking at who is goin to be judging, they will be looking for finish and conformation. Your Kohaks are in between so I would say it still depends on who is bringing out what.

Assuming I understand correctly, the female is back in the mud this summer? If so, you should consult with Brady about showing her. She may need another year or two. Or, if 'ready' this year, a September show date affects harvesting her. She would need time out of the mud in clear water to look her best for show. Go with Brady's advice. ... Good luck!

It's always fun to speculate about who the judges are and what they like etc etc, but bottom line is you need to show your koi when they are ready. I think we americans don't get this as well as the japanese and europeans do.

Your female is in transistion and I'm not sure it would be in both your interest ( hers and yours) to put her thru the stress of a show right now .

You do however learn from participating and there is value there. Your males are at a size where they will not be able to compete with females much longer, so why don't you consider taking them both and learning from the experience.

thanks for posting and good luck at the show.

Thanks for everyone's feedback! Dick you bring up some very good points.

I have not purchased either of Brady's fish, but I'm considering both. The last Kohaku I do own and he's the pond favorite! It appears that most of you prefer the female over the male. Brady was going to bring me the fish at the Atlanta Show and since it was there I was going to enter it. Has anyone seen a nice Kohaku around this size or smaller that's available for less than $1,000? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
