Wow, what an awesome experience! This was my first year showing koi and I did pretty well for a novice runnin' with the big dawgs! One of my koi won best in size 1 and another one won the PNKCA Friendship Award. The PNKCA Friendship Award was a very nice koi bowl donated by judge Larry Gill.

I can't say enough about this show. It had it all: a fun atmosphere, lots of laughter, plenty of learning, but above all, a whole bunch of people sharing the same passion getting together to share their knowledge, experience, and to brag about their koi. And ofcourse there are the vendors that came from both instate and out-of-state. I learned so much from these people as well.

There are three people that I need to mention that I hope everyone in this forum will have a chance to meet one day. These are, in no particular order of importance, Dick Benbow, Larry Gill, and Russell Peters. They all share one thing in common and that is they are forerunners in this hobby who love to teach and share their knowledge. I can't thank them enough for taking time out of their busy schedule to share with me not only their experiences with koi, but with life as well, and I strongly encourage them to continue with what they have been doing in hopes of advancing this great hobby.

Russell, I just wanted to let you know that you brought up some killer Matsunosuke tosai and that I will definitely keep in touch with you for some tategoi in the near future. In fact I will see you and your lovely wife this upcoming September at the Tosio Sakai seminar. In the meantime please continue with your great posts cuz it sure makes life at work more interesting!

Judge Larry, thank you for your input on my koi. It's definitely refreshing to hear your comments on how they will develop and how to look for potential tategoi. You have definitely drilled it into my head that I need to look for conformation over pattern when it comes to looking for a show koi.

Dick, thank you for taking this rook under your wings and sharing your experiences with me. You are truly a great man whose wisdom and knowledge is way beyond his years. I thought that you were a knowledgable man from reading your posts, but meeting you in person has proved me wrong; you are beyond knowledge.....you have definitely gone full circle ;-)! Because of you, I am a step closer to completing that circle as well! Please continue to share with us rooks your knowledge on koi, bonsai, and life.

What a great show!!!!!!!!

having the air pump too close to any tank with a competitor's koi as the air and vapors produced by the air stones could be sucked in and redistributed to all tanks. That was pretty profound to me and something I would have never given any thought to.......
I would like to note to those concerned by this post that the Northwest Koi and Goldfish Club has been in the forefront when it comes to bio-security. We were one of the first clubs to institute hand washing between handling of tanks, nets, water and bowls, and one of the first to add screens between the tanks to prevent splashing of water between tanks. Although the possibility of contamination is quite low we stress bio-security above all else. When the issue of the air pumps location was pointed out it was immediately cordoned off with a physical barrier from tanks near by. This barrier was erected before any fish were placed in the tank closest to the pump. The club always reviews the show afterwards and this topic will be discussed at that time.

Hi Michael,

Dick already supplied the info on the RC. Here are the breeders /dealers of the other champs:

GC - Koda (Keirin)
Young - Omosako (Nishikigoi of Niigata)
Baby- Ogata (Eastern Nishikigoi)

We really enjoyed seeing everyone and appreciated our out of state friends Dick Benbow , Tom Ayers, Dan and Sharon Olson, Greg and Judy Linnebach, Carl Forss and Carolyn Swanson.....And anyone else I might have missed...!

Lam, thanks for your kind words, and Pete's as well. I love the friendships made at these shows and I go back a few years with the folks in Portland.

FYI the next to last kohaku in the post before this one had a very attractive pattern
and i was surprised to learn she was bred by ISA, the famous showa breeder.

On my e-n-d-l-e-s-s ride home, I came upon a much-needed name for her--Lisa, full name Lisa Hajime. Punchy or what?????
