Status of KHV vaccine outside Japan

Hello folks,

A colleague of mine asked me the status of KHV vaccine development outside of Japan. Could any of you provide a summary?

Hi Brian,
Quite a few research projects are on going. Here is a link to a summary put together in April 2007 by Spike Cover head of AKCA Project KHV.

Thanks for posting that link, Ray. Think we'd all benefit from updating our knowledge of what's been happening in the area of KHV research.

Much appreciated.

As far as the vaccine goes, there are now three countries working or using an effective vaccine. Israel has one in use on both food and ornamental carp and has been pursuing this vaccine program for two years now. The Polish authorities are testing this vaccine for their general use as we speak. I suspect a few other former Eastern Block countries will be next based on established trading relations, line breeding co-operations and cultural history. Hungry and Bulgaria would be likely candidates in the next fee years, IMHO.
Independently, a British company is ramping up for a test run on vaccine specific for this virus. This is a huge business in Asian, Asia Minor and Eastern Europe, so I think the money will hurry this vaccine along where possible.
As I understand the Japanese efforts they are still in the very early stages of vacine study. JR

Speaking of KHV, I have heard nothing this year. Is the disease way down? In So. Cal not a peep and my limited connections to Japan say the same. Any one have "factual" knowledge of a break out?

The thing that has changed about KHV is that it has gone from being a hobbyist problem to being what it should have been all along , an industry problem. I contended that this is what it should have been handled as from the beginning. It is now checked for and policed at the source. And along the distribution chain. the fact that Kindai knows what he knows and yet Mark sees no evidence of it in California markets is proof what I'm saying. JR

I'm can't pretend to be "in the know" because I'm not, but I think S.K. and JR's points are spot on. The protocols the various breeders, prefectures, and Japanese authorities have in place now are much more effective at cutting it off before it gets into the marketplace.
IHMO the biggest problems that lie ahead will be with the non-Japanese knock-off breeders popping up in S.E.Asia in a few countries with few if any controls and no scruples. The always warm waters will produce a lot of untested and undetected survivor/carriers.

IF I may......

In the past, many distributors have gotten in fish that were in serious trouble, and instead of identifying, containing, and eliminating the problem, they shipped them out, hence becoming someone elses problem. Most end line customers, either retailers or retail customers, thinking they were the ones that killed the fish, never filed for replacements.

Now that awareness has hit the market place, and testing is available for those that want to do it, the whole market place has changed. While there are still those that would ship out fish before they die at their premises, most will hold a shipment if they are not right. Even if it means they will sit on several thousand fish for a while. That was not the case before.

10,000 fish with a problem at one site is much better than several hundred fish at 500 different locations all with the same problem.
