When I was at the Central Florida Koi Show in 2007 I watched Brady sex one of Lukes koi by squeezing milt out. This summer I had some 8" culls in a bucket of Clove oil. What the heck, I tried it out, and was amazed how easy it was to squeez out milt. I have practiced alot since then, and have the technique down now that I can do it without brusing the koi and without putting them to sleep. I will try to get this on video sometime.

Hi Greg, before I torture and practice on my tosai and nisai, I need to ask you this question: can you squeeze milt out of young koi? I thought that milt is only produced in sexually mature koi. If you can squeeze out milt, then what about eggs in young koi? Wow, if this is possible, then it would be a great way to sex young koi.

Also, I read somewhere in this forum, thanks to Don, that milt (and eggs?) is/are only produced during the breeding season. I know that Russell Peters tried to squeeze milt in the young koi that he brought up here during the NWKG show. However, I don't think that he was successful. He did mention two pointers that I thought were helpful: females have even-lengthed pec rays and protruding anus.

I have never squeezed out eggs. If I don't get milt, I assume its a female koi. I know I have squeezed out milt of koi that were 12 months old, because I did that with last years babies.

I'll catch some of this years babies (4 months old now). and post back my results, hopefully with pictures.

Ok, I caught a few koi tonight and tested for sex. This one is one of my smaller 2 year olds. It was born May 2006, so is 15 months old right now. Easily squeezed milt from it. Ive done this earlier in the year also, so finding males in 12 month old koi should be no problem.

Thank you for the insight and illustrations Greg. I guess I will be into koi pornography too when I net a few of my koi tomorrow and start milting them. Hopefully my wife will be willing to participate and take some pixs as my hands will be busy handling these koi.

On a side note, I was at a dealer's place a week ago and he bowled up several potential nisai (born spring of 2006). I asked him if he could tell me what their sex were and, in addition to doing other things, he starting milting them. Of the 5 koi that were in the bowl, none of them produced any milt. Well, I purchased 2 of them and, if you are right Greg, they must be females!!!
