is between 21/2 an 3' deep enough for the fotthills of n.c

It might be deep enough for the foothills but not for Koi.

Ideal pond depth would be 6'-7' feet...anything deeper is just crazy...

I think your minimum depth should be 4'. Deeper is better though.

The deeper the better......dang that sounds like more koi pornography!

Listen to the pros iceman27030. I was in your shoes not too long ago. I thought that 3' was going to be deep enough. Boy was I glad that I listened to these guys and built it 5-5.5' deep. Now I wish I had dug it deeper. But yeah, I would agree with the guys that a depth between 5.5' - 7' is good. If I had to redo my pond I would make it sloping from 6' to 7' deep. Hope this helps!

The recommendations that have been given are very solid. Also, considering where you live, those deeper depths would be more beneficial for you . You also have to consider your "frost line(?)". The water can be maintained in a warmer state during winter if you're well below that. Also keep your plumbing below it as much as possible to reduce the chance of cracking/freezing. Definitely wrap everything above ground.
