| Very nice selection of kohaks
Wow, very nice kohakus! Are these yours, Dan? Cuz if they are then I am very envious? Koimann, how do you know that they are Maruyamas just by looking at them?
Anyways, this rook's gonna take a stab at rating these koi. Then he'll sit back and see how he did when the pros rate them later. I agree with Koimann that #s 4,5, and 6 are the better half. However, I would rate them 6, 5, then 4. As for the second half, I would rate them 2,3, then 1.
I like #6 because it has good conformation with broad shoulders and tail joint. The beni is even in intensity from head to tail with a traditional u-shaped head and good tail stop. There are some beni on the dorsal fin. However, it does not go all the way to the top of the fin, indicating that it may recede as the koi age. If I am not mistaken, there is a patch of beni on its right cheek, giving it character and uniqueness. The nidan pattern has very deep wrap. This will ensure that the beni will be proportional with the shiro when the koi grows. The head is clean and white and proportional to the rest of the body. Good sashi and kiwa. I see a very bright future in this young koi.
Koi #5 is very close behind koi #6. However, I believe that the conformation is not as good as #6. The deep persimmon beni is very nice and will fit very nicely when the koi grows. I am afraid that the beni on the dorsal fin may not recede as it completely covers the fin. Furthermore it is not as unique as the 1st place koi.
Koi #4 is also a very nice koi. I place it behind #5 and #6 b/c of several reasons: conformation is not as good as the first 2 koi; while the head is very unique, there is not enough beni, leaving a tail-heavy koi; head is a little yellow, but I suspect that it will go away with age; there is not enough wrap to support the expanding shiroji as it grows.
The last 3 koi are also very good koi. However, to my knowledge, the conformation are not as good as the first 3. Also, while the patterns are nice and flowery, they just don't have enough wrap and there are not enough beni on the body to support the koi as they grow.
