venturi, where and how to install in pond

Hi All, I need help figuring out where to put Venturi in pond. How deep? All the research I have done gives conflicting advice. I looked up diy but found a white pvc 1.5" at AE for $11.00

I only get one shot gluing it together and I need to do it right. What size pump is ideal?

I have a two tier pond. Weir is out of commission till I figure out what to do about my leak.

5000gal 4.5-5 feet deep (sloping.) Please advise, Your experience and expertise is appreciated.

The depth of the venturi depends on the amount of pressure that your pump can produce. If the venturi is too deep it will take too much pressure to pull the oxygen down the standpipe on the venturi.

That being said, you are way better off getting an air pump and putting several high quality air stones in your pond. It will increaase your DO levels much better than a venturi.

venturi and pump

Hi Russel, I have a 3600gph submersible pump. Can I use It? Put a ball valve on if too much.(to sound stupid I don't understand how to do the math.) will this work till I can get another air pump, two air pumps?
I have a hakko 80L and a disk diffuser running now. I don't care at this point if I blow the motor or the electricity bill. (I know, I know... but my baby's need it. It's been hot here too! Thanks, Lori

for the energy consumed...use an air dome on the bottom drain. The rising column of air can rotate all the pond water to the surface for gas exchange and also help sweep debris to the bottom drain.

Don't got a bottom drain with air dome? Good time to plan for as a fall project.

air dome

I researched this and it is basically what I am doing now?? Lori

12" disk diffuser from AZ pond Round rubber top with tons of itty bitty holes in it.
Hakko 80L air pump

diffuser placed about 6" above and next to the intake to the leaf basket to the filter. Lori

May be ugly (I have it mounted on a plastic box fillet with rocks) but same principle? Kind of?

I am at the get my beauty's healthy stage. I don't care what the pond looks like till I can build a professional "working" concrete pond. Please reply, Lori

I have to agreee w/the others that a venturi will cause too much head loos for your pump so going the other route is better......

but to answer your question you can put the venturi 12-18" below ground level.

another problem with venturi or eductors....something more for the koi to hit.

to me either are a patch....trying to get more DO or water movement. Those are the kinds of things that need to be planned in from the beginning.

If you want to build a BD with air dome...no problem. See attachment. You can also purchase them.

But none will do you any good if you already have the pond installed. BDs with air domes are something for the next pond rebuild. In the meantime, use air stone and a good air pump (at least 40L) to bring up the DO level. You want DO to measure at least 80% of saturation. DO can be measured with a drop kit, just like ammonia, nitrite, ph ...etc.

question about DIY bd diffuser.

I saw your instructions a few days ago on another site while I was researching. It is much prettier than the ones for sale.

I read and re-read your instructions and can't figure out where water from the pond enters?
I get the weighted base
The air intake
drain opening to filter

Can this unit sit on the bottom of pond and work? Bottom slopes to one corner this is the deepest area in pond
I have a liner and those ss screws scare me.

I already have the disk diffuser that is on the materials list so this will be a snap to make

OK...

air enters the 1" pipe down at the bottom and inflates air dome when it is screwed in

The bottom 6" port on the sanitary T is full of concrete...no water going in or out there.

The 4" port on the side is for water going to the filter.

Sooooooo that leaves the top 6" port for water to enter around the edges of the air dome. This is the same as any other BD with a dome.

Don't like puting holes and screws in liner...then I guess you will not be doing a skimmer either.

Seriously folks build ponds all day long and don't have leaks about BDs, skimmers, TPR holes..etc.
