It's a pretty fish and in 4-5 years will start to fill in and loose it's slenderness.

Lesson time: See the uniformity of all the sumi on the fish. If the spot you were concerned about was something different then it would be a caution. But as your eyes travel the length of the koi all of the sumi is in similar transitional condition. I would not worry about this koi's sumi......

Thanks, Tony! now I have something to look forward to in years to come. it's a good learning experience so far.

to be honest, when I was looking for the old pictures this morning for this comparison, after putting the then and now pictures side by side, I was surprised how different the fish had change and it looks better now too. after hearing all the talks about not to buy tosai, I think this one beats the odd so far. I guess I have Mike (koicsar) to thank since he passed up this fish. Mike picked the fish that I really wanted. not sure if he still has his fish. Maybe I walk over to his pond and check it out since we practically live less than a 100 yards away.

Thank you, Dick! this sanke is one of my favorites so it's good to know that this is part of growing up.

I hope it's a female. it kinda looks like a male but I can't tell for sure. I have a few males and they rough up this fish quite a bit during the spawning season that I had to separate this sanke from the males.

I agree. The sumi is only going to improve, especially this coming fall/winter. I like the beni and sumi on this fish. Still young and lots of potential. Definitely worth hanging on to for at least 2 more years. Mine hasn't grown as large as yours has. It's doing extremely well even though only about 14" at this time. The colors are very strong and bright for this time of year. You'll have to come over one day seeing as how you live almost next door and then I'll come and visit you to see your stock. Should be fun.

Hi Mike,

I was going to walk over and check out your pond this weekend but didn't get home until dark on both days. I'll try to stop by today or tomorrow. btw, if you see someone stick his head over the fence to check out your pond, it would be me. I've done it a few times in the past but didn't know its your pond.

Hi Steve,

I think I missed this one because Kari and I were at the Denver Koi Show. You have a very nice female Sanke. The sumi is in transition and will be stunning when it develops fully. Both the Beni and Sumi can change quite a bit as Sakai's Koi grow. The best story I have is when Nathan saw his Showa when he went to Isawa. It had grown quite a bit and the Sumi was way down and the beni was light. When he asked Mr. Sakai about it, Mr. Sakai smiled and said "I will be happy to take it back".

Hi Russell, once again I am amazed at how you can look at a young koi and tell whether it's a male or female without even physically examining it. Perhaps you could share with the rooks as to what it is that you are looking at when it comes to sexing young koi. I look at Steve's Sanke and just can't seem to predict whether it's a male or female.......

Hey, what can I say...........you look at women long enough, you learn what to recognize.

Take a look at the second picture, the after picture, of the Sanke and enlarge it if you can. Focus on the pecs and you will see that all of the rays are about the same size. In a male the leading ray would be much larger than the rest.

Thank you very much Russell for taking the time out of your busy schedule to share your knowledge with me. I did enlarge it in Adobe and measure the rays and they are pretty similar.

I guess I haven't been looking at women long enough to be able to learn what to recognize. Next time I see a woman in a mall or walking down the street I am going to stare really hard and see if I can visually measure her 'fins'! Hahaha!!!
