Question Question about spawning...

My whole pond spawned all night last night and most of the morning...My whole pond is full of eggs...
It's about 10 hours later now and the fish are being very still....some of them are even laying on their sides...if I stick my hand down they get and run around in a flurry...but if I let them sit they lay back on their sides...
I have never witnesed my fish doing this,,,is it normal after spawning...are they just worn out or should I be alarmed??? Would appreciate any input...
They are in a 1000g preformed pond with Hiacinths and 2 Plecos...all else is fine other than the water got alittle cloudy from the spawn...I did a partial water change to clear it up some and the fish moved around fine,,,,but soon as it gets quiet they lay down again...

your ammonia has probably gone out of control. quick....get a test kit and check the ammonia levels. Get some ammonia binder in there FAST if ammonia is a problem. Get all the eggs out of there that you can as they will only contribute to the problem. Examine fish for damage. Some fish are damaged to the point of dying from spawning.

This is late to need, but next time do a major water change immediately. It's a given that your water quality went south with Ammonia & Nitrite, so bind it with Ammolock, or CloramX.

It's almost impossible to OD on CloramX.

Sure hope you checked back here in time to take the above advice. Otherwise, it's probably too late.

A 1000 gallon preform with koi old enough to spawn leaves no room for safety when it comes to water quality disasters.

Good luck,

she posted over on koishack too and is getting some advise there. Two of the 4 fish died overnight, the other two are badly beat up from spawning. She has done massive water changes....probably too big and cleaned the eggs out of the pond.

Mature koi don't belong in small preforms.

Another unfortunate example of how big water would have provided the extra margin of safety that big fish need. So sad.

Yep...in a small pond, the female cannot possible hope to escape the males advances. There is simply no where for her to go.
