Between the two, I prefer the Kohaku. I expect the heavy Hi on the head will turn off many. Not an 'ooh-ahh' show winner, but a nice body and an overall look and geometric pattern that I think would give a lot of viewing pleasure.

They both have something to like as pond fish -- but neither one has the makings of a show fish. Your choice based on what you're looking for?

Well, koi hobby is supposed to be a 'pass time' so buy what you like and, over time, you will learn what good koi are and why. Most of us like doitsu and ginrin when we begin and then male showa and then male other gosanke as our eye improves. And eventually we get around to appreciating female gosanke and when we look back at what we used to like, the light bulb goes on. I think it's important to photograph new fish that you buy and over the years look at those shots and see what it is that attracted you to that purchase and what you think about it now. Its a fascinating growth experience and the 'rear view mirror' is a good way to judge the progress of your eye. JR

PS did the dealer say 'she' was a female?

Ah Ha

Ok, I get it. I am totally in the Gin Rin phase. It is fun though. I feel that after spending some time lurking here I did pick a very nice utsuri.
