GFCI receptancles and breakers work by using an electomagnet that holds the main circut closed. When a ground fault happens, the power on the electromagnetic is interrupted and a powerful spring opens then the main circuit. Too many electrical and mechanical parts for it to be 99.9999999% availability and reliability. Just use a good old GFCI receptacles from the DIY stores like the rest of us.

for the pump, you can get a GFI outlet swich combo. you can plug the pump directly into this outlet and switch is On/Off easy during the backwash cycles. see pictures.

my circuit diagram is like this. I drilled a hole through the stucco wall and connected the komex wires directly into the back of the outlet inside the house. One the outside end of komex, I built a water proof GFI outlet (one those with clear plastic cover to prevent rain drops from wet it). Komex cable can be used with out the conduit but it has be bury at certain deep. check with your local codes if you concern. hope it helps!

Thanks so much! Today the water sparkled I am sooooo happy I found you all. Again, Thanks. (I am sorry, but if you need to know something you go to the top!)

Now, to hard wire a switch to the pump. Where is a good place to get a fail proof hard wire GFI's? (On another list GFI's failed and a pond full of dead fish.)
I test my GFI's regularly but there has got to be something better than a $10 from blue and orange?

I have looked but not in the right places?
AE only has the extension cord type.
Don't worry, I can do this myself I am real good at plumbing and electrical stuff.
While my girlfriends are having their toes and nails done, I am sitting on the floor of the hardware store playing with PVC and wing nuts.

Wait till I build my new pond....

Hi Steve, as a building contractor I need to point out a few things so that people who do things themselves won't get into trouble.

First of all, the wire you are talking about is called Romex not Komex. Romex can be used in walls and under floors but needs to be installed properly. Romex can never be buried nor can it be used in metal or plastic conduit. Do not bury Romex in the ground!!!!!
Also, when it comes to a GFI outlet, you must always use one outside, no matter what, because it gets wet outside. Even if you have a wet locations box for your plug you must have it GFI protected. It can be protected with a GFI outlet or with a GFI breaker at the main panel. It must be used!!
There is a direct burial wire that is available. It comes in a grey sheathing. You can use this outside but it has to be buried a minimum of 18". You must also protect this line with a GFI.

Actually, what concerned me was the description of how it was being used which can create a hazard in the long run.
