I'm truly sorry to hear this Nancy. As Koiczar says, the fish more than likely gets spooked and makes a dash for it without being sure of their surroundings. Have seen it happen quite often during and post-harvest as well.

So Sorry

Nancy and frank, I'm so sorry for the loss of such a great sanke. I'm glad that you were able to know that it was natural causes, and you did nothing wrong. I wish you and frank all the best.

Jim and angie kitchen,
Mamason Koi

just curious, if this was a result of stray voltage, wouldn't there be more fish killed? I would think so. probably the whole pond got electrocuted, not just one fish.

Sorry to hear this Nancy! She is a gorgeous Sanke.

hope you don't mind I share this happy ending story. I had a similar experience after I transferred my fish from old pond into new pond. I thought I lost her but luckily I was there to revive her. I put her into the new pond and went back to the old pond to bring more fish. it was a matter of less than 5 minutes, I found her floating upside down. I took her back to the old pond and work on reviving her. She was breathing. the gills were flapping but couldn't swim or remain in normal position without help. After about 10 minutes, she was able to return to normal position without assistance but not swimming yet. I settle her to the bottom to eliminate human contact (at this point, I thought holding on to her will provide more shocking then help) and she continue to rest for another couple minutes before swimming away.

We left for dinner at 7:13 and returned home at 8:25, I went out back to have my after dinner cigarette and looked in the pond and seen one of our fish laying on the bottom, I yelled for Frank and I grabbed our net, and pulled her out, we 1st examined her to see if she had any injuries, none not even a scale missing. checked her gills they were in perfect condition, we started moving her and got our air ring into the net with her, I worked on her for 40 minutes, and I failed to revive her. I could not stop trying Frank finally pulled me away from her and took her out of the pond. I tested our water and all perimeters were as usual. All other fish in the pond are fine. After I quit crying I went and replayed our surveillance camera's. At 7:58 the Sanke was swimming fine along with all the others. At 8:01 she started to swim very fast and hit the wall of our pond she immediately came up out of the water, and then went straight down, she floated on the surface a few minutes, then went straight to the bottom. She died 20 minutes before we got home. We have no clue as to why she died, we are both just heart broken over this fish. She was in our eyes an extremely beautiful fish.
Here is the last picture of her taken at the ZNA SoCal show 2007 She was the Mature Champion.

Nancy, very sorry to read about your loss,.. she was a beautiful koi.

Had a similar experience 2 summers ago, lost my favourite Showa, only I was there when it happened. I was sitting pondside playing 'who wants a finger', he'd just come up to me and I'd given him a stroke on the nose, a moment later someone walked up behind me and he spooked and slammed himself into the pond wall 3 ft away from where I was sitting (so hard I felt it!)...he died within minutes and I couldn't help but cry.
