Our Ofuchi Sanke, I am heart broken

Yesterday Frank, came home from work early and did our normal weekly 20% water change. When I got home it was 5:45 and 97 degree's outside pond temp was 76. The high yesterday was 101 degree's. We left for dinner at 7:13 and returned home at 8:25, I went out back to have my after dinner cigarette and looked in the pond and seen one of our fish laying on the bottom, I yelled for Frank and I grabbed our net, and pulled her out, we 1st examined her to see if she had any injuries, none not even a scale missing. checked her gills they were in perfect condition, we started moving her and got our air ring into the net with her, I worked on her for 40 minutes, and I failed to revive her. I could not stop trying Frank finally pulled me away from her and took her out of the pond. I tested our water and all perimeters were as usual. All other fish in the pond are fine. After I quit crying I went and replayed our surveillance camera's. At 7:58 the Sanke was swimming fine along with all the others. At 8:01 she started to swim very fast and hit the wall of our pond she immediately came up out of the water, and then went straight down, she floated on the surface a few minutes, then went straight to the bottom. She died 20 minutes before we got home. We have no clue as to why she died, we are both just heart broken over this fish. She was in our eyes an extremely beautiful fish.
Here is the last picture of her taken at the ZNA SoCal show 2007 She was the Mature Champion.

Sorry to hear what happened to the Sanke Nancy. I was really happy to have judged the Sanke in Gardena and in hopes of seeing her in 2008.

Nancy

I certainly can sympathize with your loss. This has happened to me twice over the last two years. In my case, I believe the fish got spooked and was not aware of her position in the pond. Subsequently, they turned and made a direct contact with the wall. Both were dead in a matter of minutes. I too tried to revive them with no luck.

I remember when you bought this fish at Oofuchi's. Russ, Erwin and I were all there at the time. I had bowled her the day before. She was a beautiful fish and well deserving of her stature given at this past SoCal show. She had a very promising future as well.

I wish you and Frank a speedy recovery from this tragic incident.

Regards

Mike

Nancy....sorry to hear of your loss. It terrible whenever one loses one of their koi, but ....such a beautiful fish, it makes it even harder. Has to be one of the most attractive sanke's I have even seen. Just beautiful. Sad for you here......

Hi Nancy,

I am very sorry to hear about your loss as well. It was truly a beautiful Sanke. It sounds like it could have had a heart attack or a massive stroke. I have seen it happen before and if that is the case there was absolutly nothing you could have done to prevent it.

Gosh Nancy and Frank. What a way to wreck a Friday evening. It truly was a special fish. Good luck picking the next champ. You know how I feel about your sankes.

Nancy & Frank,
I am very sorry to hear about your sanke. At least you have the video to give you some clues of what happened.

All my sympathy. We koikeepers have to adjust to these losses.

Having the video let's it be known that "it" was an individual problem, not anything that might affect the other fish... and nothing you did or forgot to do.
