Beautiful view!

Where was that taken at? Did you find any bonsai prospects?

Hi Dick, when you go bonsai hunting, what do you use as a weapon?

Whenever I think of places I would find suitable for bonsai hunting in California I am always afraid of legal issues. Due to the fact that all of the good spots I can think of are owned by the man (the government) I am always curious about the fact that all of these bonsai books advocate bonsai hunting when it seems rather illegal to me, I don't want to get popped by some prissy park ranger but I would love to go out on a hunt:confu sed:

Cliffs like that are a great place to look for bonsai because the terrain has already done a lot of the work of making the wild trees stressed and there for forming the basic shapes we are looking for while foraging for trees to bonsai

Oregon Coast

We have great opportunities for Bonsai here. The cliffs and the winds and the cold weather create natural prospects that can be cultivated. I don't know of the particulars when it comes to what can be harvested. I hear of nice bonsai harvested all the time here without any permits. I would be interested in hearing if anyone else has info on harvesting here.

National Parks, take only pictures, leave only foot prints. Private property, seek owner's permission and have at it. Sometimes it is more fun to walk among the treasures than to collect them as well.

If you are really into bonsai and you live in CA join one of the many bonsai clubs out there. They know where to go to legally "hunt" bonsai.

There is a permit process to dig and also a tag to buy and display to use public faciities like trailheads etc. BUT private land can be less of a paperwork hassel as long as you have the ok from the owner. They usually think it's funny that people wanted the stunted trees. My secret has been to find the owner's favorite breakfast spot in town and pay for his breakfast. This starts up a conversation/introduction. Most of the waitresses know who owns what.

Russ, my favorite tool of choice is a shovel but sometimes it has to be a chisel.

Carmen, nope didn't find anything. Bonsai, like koi....if I don't find something really special then I leave it be and walk on.
