Ochiba

Looking for some input/opinions...

For the past couple of years we've been trying our hand at breeding, learning a lot, having ups and downs as we go. This year we feel we've almost hit the mark with regards to rearing success, our numbers are much better this season. Our main choice for breeding, Ochiba. Parents: 5yr old female wagoi Soragoi and 3yr old male doitsu Ochiba. We also used a 12yr male Koromo (Ai-goromo) as we didn't have other males of age/size and thought it might be a kick to see what came of the offspring... there are a few with kohaku patterns and we hope to see eventual robing of the koromo.

Here's a few snapshots. 9 weeks old.

Looks like time to cull the kind of orange somethings. That Ochiba needs the room for itself... it's got a pretty face.

Thanks Mike.
We've been culling the ogon pretty regular(and hard),... just a couple hundred left atm. The Ochiba did have their own pond up until 3 weeks ago but something went terribly wrong with the water so we pulled them and put them into the ogon pond. In another week plans are to pull majority of the ogon out, just a few will remain to grow on with the ochiba.

Kind Regards,
Terri

Sounds like a plan! ... Ochiba with a decent step pattern are not common. The one in your first photo could be a truly worthy keeper. That does not happen very often in homebreeding. I hope it is a she, that the Sora remains light and the Cha steps keep their intensity. If she then has a solid Ochiba body, I'd like to have her.

So a little update... 4 months old, 4 inches, this would be our 'number 1' Ochiba

Here's a few more...
#2 thus far

close runner up for #2...

a wait and see...???

Here are a few kohaku that came from this pairing, nothing special but interesting enough coming from ochiba and soragoi parents. We are beginning to think the koromo didn't play much part ... 2006 pairing with the soragoi and ochiba yielded several kohaku then.

Kind Regards,
Terri

Can I have the # 1 . Very nice !

I'll be looking for a Ochiba on my New Jersey trip , plus a friend will be looking for me in Japan . But I'd be OK with three !

I've just sent my friend a photo of your #1 Ochiba . I hope he can find the twin in Japan .

Nice Koi

Don't give up on the Kohaku yet, the goromo could start showing even a year from now.

Very nice Ochiba.

What are your winter care plans for these 4-inchers?

Thank you all for your nice comments. Mr.Peters,... we shall see, I hope you are right.

Mike, they have moved inside to one of our tanks. It's 2500 gallons, gravity fed to a Nexus Eazy 300. Tank sits in front of a West facing 10' L x 5' H window for natural light - the tank itself has grow lights above but we are thinking of switching to MH. Won't be heating the water only the air, hope to keep them in the mid-low 70's over winter, will depend on the fuel bills. Oh, feed feed and feed some more spoil them silly essentially.

Kind Regards,
Terri
