while this can be detrimental but if someone can afford to spend 75K on fish, changes are s/he has a deep pocket so money is just relative to earning power. (wish I can have that)

having said that, I would say it's an opportunity to refocus by first spending some $$$ on learning how to take care the fish. this include improve hardwares that involve in the pond and koi keeping husbandry. then spend more money and get better fish.

Steve I think most of us that have lost a expensive fish, dont even think about the money aspect of it, at least we didn't when we recently lost a fish.. We only thought about our beautiful fish and how much we would miss seeing her swim in our pond. The $ issue never played a part in the loss we just suffered.

Sometimes you loss a fish, and it has nothing to do with your koi keeping skills or your pond system.. Chit just happens.. and it can happen to a $20 fish or a $20,000 fish.

I know the collection I lost 2 years ago, was hard...(yeah it was my fault)...It took me over 2 years to recover mentally...There were many sentimental fish in that pond and some were my closest friends in the hobby who trusted me to condition their fish for show. I think that is what hurt me the most, but as time went on I had enough strenght to buy some fish again to begin the process again. What did I learn from that accident, a $10-15 water timer would have saved what I lost.

Be it $75 or $75,000 dollars it stills hurts the heart, mind and the pocket.

I have since upgraded to more expensive Koi but when I was buying lower end Koi it still bothered me to loose one. Not much difference then loosing a mutt dog compared to a pedigree dog to me.

I would hope what I would do if I lost my entire collection is start over. Start fresh but with a lot more knowledge than I had in the beginning. Identify the cause of the disaster and fix whatever it was so it could not happen again.

I would buy only one or two nice show quality koi each year. I would focus on keeping fewer but nicer koi in better and less crowded conditions. Keeping koi is a journey not a destination.
