I would rather settle for one drop dead gorgeous fish rather than have 24 fish. Just imagine getting stuck with fish that you don't want to keep after 2 years.

That is the great and wonderous mystery of this hobby.

I wholeheartedly believe that this is why we as hobbyist really need the support of one another. We need this and other boards and others in our hobby who have themselves also experienced a similar loss in order to ease our pain and to help explain our loss; and, in the process often teach us what we have ourself overlooked or explain away the unexplainable.
I once met a man named Clarence, who taught me how to fish using rubber worms. He told me..."What I have shown you .... show others."

Lin and I invested $6000. in some 45 koi back in late 2005, early 2006. Around Febuary of that year we noticed some becomming ill...Only to find out we have recieved the gift of KHV. Every day we would walk down to our indoor tanks to find 1...2...3 dead. We endured this heartache for roughly 2 months before making the heartbreaking decision of euthanizing the final 15 koi.

It was make or break time when we had to make the tough decision...Quit the hobby or take all we have learned and pass it on to others so the same mistakes won't occur. In that short time, with the help of Dr. Helen Roberts by our side we have learned so much about the hobby we felt it would be a waste to walk away.

It seems the more we learn, the more we find out there is more to learn. Once you get over the intiial hurt and loss, it gets easier. I'm glad for boards like this one and others where we can share and discuss topics such as this.

Sincerely,
Walt

One drop-dead koi is a lonely koi. Maybe others prefer his/her lonesomeness, but I rather have 10 non-drop dead koi to give my pond some liveliness.

Walt: Very thoughtful comment. These tragedies occur. Those who persevere become better hobbyists; and, I think, gain more pleasure from the hobby than before.
