What would you do if you lost $75K in fish in a year?

cry, get disgusted, think about filling the pond in--- wait---- think about it some more---- wait----- then fix the cause of the original problem ( maybe build quarantine, put timers on fill hoses, redesign piping so pond won't drain pond water to bottom, upgrade filters, improve turnover if needed, build in redundancy, get a generator, hire a local dealer to keep an eye on things when I'm away, measure meds twice before using, have a predesigned drill for emergency water changes)
And THEN, Go out and buy just a few new fish.

it's like falling off a horse

You have the option to walk ( albeit limp) away or you can get back on and ride. The option is yours. It says something of your character. If you put the cost of the loss as a precedent than you value what was expended and lost.
If you value an education, then you fix what was wrong and continue to advance and learn. I would hope for this individual, the grit to get back on the horse, to be determined to improve their koi keeping skills, to realize that in the journey of life there will be loss and gain. It's how you handle it that makes you the person your becoming......this is a perfect season to get hold of Russ and say "hey, I want to go to japan with you, talk to some folks like Toshio and learn and maybe, just maybe pick out another koi".

The money is all relative. Most people I know probably don't have a $75k collection....I know I sure don't! That being said, I almost quit the hobby shortly after i got into it. The collection that was lost was not $75k, probably more like $750 and it was lost due to my stupidity (good learning experneice though). But the loss of those fish almost pushed me over the edge because they were pets. I did stick with the hobby and build a couple nice Q tanks so that problem won't happen again. I moved forward with nicer fish too.

I once lost a $10000 showa just 3hours after i got it from airport. It jumped out through the net from the quarrantine tank.Couldnt sleep and kept silent for a couple of days. Then there was a soil erosion incident after some heavy rain a few years back where I lost all but 3 of my kois.But.....I'm still in the hobby and getting more into it everyday! Cheers!
