ochiba ???

it's been an interesting learning experience so far. watching it changes was quite a ride. I think it's an ochiba. I picked it up from local koi dealer on july 2006. it was 7 inches then. it went thru 3 changing stages already and I am just amazed how often it changes its appearance. I am not too concern on how nice the pattern look. my question on those scatter little dots, will it clean up later as it grows. it last 3+ months, seem like some the dots already faded away.

and yes it's hard to believe it's the same fish. Wow what a changer! I finally got my first ochiba this year. She came in 3 months ago at 11 inches and is now 16. I say she because when she came in you couldn't tell body shape wise what it was, now it's obviously a girl! They're a neat koi, don't know how I was able to hold off getting one till now. Let us know if yours keeps changing! Fortunately for me mine has stayed rock steady the whole time.
To be honest I have watched this color variety, even bred them, and am convinced that when they were created originally the patterns were more stable but as they breed ochiba to ochiba, it seems to create problems. They bruise easier and turn a dark grey and patterns seem easier to be affected.
Where I got mine, Nisei koi farm, Mat breeds his gi-normous female ochiba with male kohakus and there within lies the difference of why I think his are more stable.

Mine is about 12 inches now and it's actually somehow looking cutter in real life. the color is just so attractive that my friends want to take it home whenever they stop by for a visit. I must admit, it's been interesting learning so far that I am actually thinking getting a better quality Ochiba for long term keeping.

If you look at the first pic, note how fuzzy the patterning is. If this was red on white, you'd immediately realize the risk of fading Hi on a Kohaku. No different here.

Sorry Dick, Gi-normous is a common word amongst the youth, or at least mine.
