What do you think of this Showa?

thanks for the in-depth analysis. this is good reading. you gotta show me that "star effect in the scale" someday. can that be seen on this picture? I looked at the fish last night and didn't find anything to dislike and still think it's an awesome looking fish.

As pattern goes the sumi seems to be coming up in all the right places or "text" book pattern in Kindai Showa. The sumi we see now will take a couple of years to truely take it's fully effect on the overall apperence of the pattern. 4. Beni, since this is the growing season, which the Showa shows well in the conformation but the beni looks too hard. In the growth season beni should be down a bit. Point 1 is the beni is too hard, which gives a false effect of depth on the fish. The deep kagura red is very misleading to the eyes of the true quality of of the overall quality. Point 2 by the pic you can see a slight hint of white between each scale. Even at this point of the year you should see the star effect in the scale, but you can't see this in the fish. This tells me the beni is at prime condition now and has only to go down hill later. 5. Pattern, very pleasing. It is balance on fits the frame well on this text book style Kindai Showa. Conclusion: To me the fish had peaked. The sign of this is the beni and the timing of the finish between the sumi and beni. Sumi is an on going change, where as the beni peaks at a certain point and bound to go down hill soon. None the else the Showa is nice for a Show, but how well it will do it depends on the Judge's judging style.

I thought this would a good study of testing one's eye. When I first saw the pic last night in a bigger sense I was attracted all everyone else on the pattern. In my mind if the conformation stood out and then pattern. To some degree the order of viewing a fish should in this order:

1. Conformation
2. Shiroji
3. Beni and Sumi
4. Pattern

This is the order that these factors should come when looking at GoSanke. Pattern is always last because each hobbyist has different taste, but each should have the same opinion/level on quality.

is there a way to keep the beni at peak, or delay its degrattion while the sumi comes along ? or is there a away to speed up the sumi development ?

I like this Showa very much as well, but my only concern from the start was the beni. It looks finished to me as well. The reason I say that is that the leading edge (Sashi) of the beni is not very deep nor is it even. This is a true indicator that the beni is finishing and it has no where to go from here.

To keep the beni at it's peak? It will all depend on water condition and food. To de-peak beni is kind of hard, it's a hard game to play...It's hard to explain, I'll tell you more when I see you around...Plus I like to talk in person anyways..

Sumi will do what it wants to do, but speeding up the condition so that it peaks to where the beni is hard. It could swing one way then go a completely different way.

Is this the "star effect in the scale" that referred to? this sample pix is from a 2+ yr old fish. it drives me nuts when I can't seems to differentiate what your were referring to.

I like this fish very much. I agree, the body is great and should get better. The red is good and I think it should last for a long time. The black, like most fish is still improving. If "your friend" gives up on the fish send it down south.
