I am 99.9% sure that it's Omosako. I was up there for both the Kentaro Sakai seminar and Omosako seminar. Joel had a pond full of Omosako Shiro tosai. I brought a couple back with me but they are not growing as fast as I would like. But then again, it's because of my water quality issue.

don't know much on shiro so pardon my questions. the sumi seemed to be fading. should that be a concern? or this is a normal. Will the sumi come back as the fish grows older. if the sumi comes back later, when will one can expect to see the it comes back? I was told that with shiro tosai, don't buy with heavy black.

I have a sanke with sumi fading a little but was told it would come back with more re-define. not sure if shiro will have similar affect.

If I was a betting man I'd be with Tony guessing male too.
As far as the guessing game on sumi goes... I'm still shooting craps on the "rise and fall" of sumi on both types. With the different characteristics of Sanke sumi vs. Showa sumi, and then the interbreeding of the two trying to meld the best traits of each... I'm likely to stay confused for a while to come... but it's a very happy place

It looks like you've been taking photography lessons from me... Bad idea
I can't really tell anything of value from the pix as there is no detail visible at all. Did it grow much more?

Very difficult to comment based on the photos. You should be patient with it. Many Omosako koi look downright terrible in their second and third years. If the sumi quality is high, you can expect wonderful improvement in the future. If the quality is not there, you may still end up with an attractive fish, but should not have high expectations. An Omosako Shiro sold off at 4" is not likely to be high quality, but could still be quite nice for the home pond.
