I'm not sure about many of you, but I long since have abondoned Baytril as my first antibiotic of choice about 2 years ago. Every once and a while I'll go back and give it a try, but it never seems to have much effect on the bacterial infections that I've encountered. I've since gone to Fortez (Azactam if you can still find it) or Naxcel. My local vet, who treats a whole lot of fish, told me this past spring that she was seeing a strain of bacteria coming out of Japan that was difficult to stem off even using Amakacin (sp). She reported that only Fortez seemed to have any effect against this strain in her practice.

I did a lot more than play 'monday morning quarterback' and quote anectdotal information when you asked for help, Bob.

There's a lesson to be learned here and it's not about mg/kg or about one's drug of choice.

The point I'm trying to make is this (and I learned it from my vet): If you kill the bacteria in a koi with a massive internal infection all at once you risk kissing your koi goodbye from organ overload if the damaged organs cannot process all the waste. And a lot of folks don't know that.

This lesson applies to more than your fish, Bob, and this lesson applies to other drugs besides Baytril.

In your case, unfortunately, this lesson would appear to have gone in one ear and out the other 'cause you're too busy defending your actions. Good luck,

No..I hear you Don. I appreciate the information. Lord knows the fish was on the edge when I decided to use the Baytril. It's possible that his organs couldn't handle it. This was a tough one to lose. Very upsetting...please forgive the attitude. Thanks for the advice as always, it's appreciated.
